Atalanta v Roma
Kick Off: Monday 12th May at 19:45
Competition: Serie A
If Roma avoid a loss, it will be the 20th straight game in which they’ve managed to do so in the league.
In order to maintain realistic hopes of a top-four finish, Roma are likely to need at least a draw in Bergamo.
Atalanta have won four of the last five meetings with Roma, drawing the remainder.
Serie A’s top scorer, Retegui, could play a large role in this clash, having regained form, managing five goal contributions across his last four games.
Having started their campaign superbly before trailing off towards the home stretch, Atalanta have now done well to regain stability and all but secure their position in the top 4.
The same cannot be said for Roma, whose abysmal start to the season under Ivan Juric has been completely turned around with Ranieri now at the helm.
Despite having made the (retrospectively) sensible decision to cut both De Rossi and Juric loose early, giving the managers just four and eight games to prove themselves respectively, Roma still find themselves in a battle for Champions League football.
Saturday’s draw between Lazio and Roma was an ideal result for the Giallorossi, who now, with a game in hand, sit just one point behind the pair, who currently occupy 4th and 5th.
That said, some tough fixtures await both Roma and Lazio, and as such, much remains up in the air.
⭐ Atalanta v Roma Predictions and Best Bets
Backing Roma to win or draw at 1.73 looks like excellent value. This would be the 20th straight league game Roma will have gone undefeated in, and given this clash is far more significant in the season of Roma compared to that of Atalanta, they should be more than up for it.
Additionally, the bookies have priced Atalanta to score under two goals, very generously. They’ve failed to exceed one goal scored in five of their most recent seven, with a similarly promising record also extending further back. Roma, on the other hand, have now gone 15 league games without conceding two or more goals.
Finally, Roma seem overpriced to pick up fewer than three cards. This selection has been a winner in each of their last ten in the league, meanwhile, 72% of Atalanta’s opponents have been awarded two or fewer cards, averaging just 1.63 - the third lowest average in Serie A. Moreover, the referee averages no more than 4.1 cards per game this season.
🔵 Atalanta Find Form to Dispel End-of-Season Pressure
Having looked a sure thing for Champions League qualification throughout most of the season, a horrific run which saw La Dea pick up 18 points from 14 games prompted the bookies to dramatically shift their perception of how the top-four race might turn out.
Since then, Gasperini’s men have seemingly gotten back on track, securing three wins and a draw across their last four, including huge victories against Bologna and Milan.
A very unfortunate 1-1 draw with Lecce put a minor dampener on things, although Atalanta were able to bounce back last weekend with a 4-0 thrashing of Monza.
Retegui has been the man of the moment for Atalanta this season, bagging 24 goals en route to picking up the Cappocannoniere, where he currently stands seven goals clear of his closest competitor, Moise Keane.
Ahead of this clash, Retegui has bagged two goals and three assists in his last four matches, which is nicely reflective of how far his hold-up and team-play have come along this season.
🟤 Roma: The Team to Beat in Italy
Roma are unlikely to be too concerned about Atalanta’s form, given they can boast some seriously impressive figures themselves.
The Giallorossi have now gone a remarkable 19 league games undefeated, picking up 47 points out of a possible 57 over the period.
The five draws all came against top-class opposition, in Lazio, Juventus, Napoli, Bologna, and Milan, although they also have plenty of big wins to write home about, too.
Defensively, they’ve been particularly impressive, keeping 9 clean sheets across their last 12 in Serie A, and conceding no more than one goal in the remaining three.
This all goes to show what an incredibly stark improvement they’ve shown since Ranieri’s appointment, with their points-per-game more than doubling, rising from 1.08 to 2.17.
📊 Atalanta v Roma Head-to-Head Key Stats
Atalanta are firmly in possession of the stronger head-to-head record between these two giants, having recorded four wins and a draw across the last five showings.
That said, technically speaking, Gasperini and Ranieri have yet to have faced off directly since their most recent respective appointments, although this depends on which way you look at it.
The reverse fixture saw Atalanta come out on top, although Gasperini was actually not present, with the Italian coach serving a touchline ban following an angry rant directed at the officials in charge of his previous game, a win against Parma.
This can be considered pretty typical of the Atalanta coach, in fact, just days ago, he engaged in a verbal and physical altercation with a journalist whom Gasperini eventually threw a notebook at.
Nonetheless, Atalanta will remain hopeful that their coach can put aside his fiery nature and replicate their dominant 2-0 win from earlier this season, in which they fired off 18 shots, compared to Roma’s five, and accumulated 1.30xG to Roma’s 0.34.
