📂 Bayer Leverkusen v Arsenal Cheat Sheet
📈 Bayer Leverkusen v Arsenal Form & Tactics
Bayer Leverkusen navigated their playoff tie against Olympiacos pretty easily, coming away 2-0 winners in the first leg which was enough to earn their progression through to the last 16 with the second leg ending 0-0. Leverkusen had a disastrous start to the season under Erik Ten Hag, who never really settled at the club and was dismissed within a few games of the season starting.
They’ve found their feet a bit more since then under the tutelage of Kasper Hjulmand and currently sit sixth in the Bundesliga, well amongst the race for a spot in the Champions League next season. Leverkusen’s main issue here will be matching the individual quality of Arsenal, we know that the Premier League sides have a natural physical advantage over their European counterparts but actual quality of the Arsenal players is likely to be the key point of difference between these sides.
Arsenal have dominated the early stages of the Champions League as the only side to win all eight of their matches. Arteta’s side haven’t even gone behind at any stage of the Champions League this season, scoring more goals than any other side (23) and conceding fewer than any other side (4). Arsenal’s next evolution will be to manage the hectic schedule at the end of the season as they aim for both the Champions League and the Premier League.
Mikel Arteta is faced with a critical period of the season across the next two weeks, with Arsenal hosting Everton in the Premier League between these Champions League ties against Leverkusen and then taking on Manchester City in the EFL Cup final. Arteta does have quite a deep squad, so he should be prepared for this run of important games and it’ll be interesting to see how that depth holds up under the pressure.
📔 Bayer Leverkusen v Arsenal Formation & Team News
Bayer Leverkusen will line up in a 3-4-3 shape, and their main two players are Alex Garcia and Alejandro Grimaldo. What stands out about Leverkusen straight away is how much of their attacking play comes down the left hand side with Grimaldo being their most important player in this regard.
Grimaldo has created 23 chances in the Champions League this season, more than any other player for Leverkusen and notably 12 more than Ibrahim Maza who is Leverkusen’s next biggest chance creator. 43% of Leverkusen’s attacks in the Champions League this term have come down the left hand side - the highest percentage of any team in the Champions League this season.
Arsenal will set up in their usual 4-2-3-1 shape on paper, though they do build up with a base of three when in possession with Martin Zubimendi dropping between Gabriel and Saliba. This allows Declan Rice to push further on, and also frees up Arsenal’s fullbacks to be more adventurous which then allows Arsenal to have control of the game in the opponents’ half.
It’s that point in the season where every club has at least a few key players unavailable due to the hectic schedule, and this game is no different. Leverkusen are expected to be without seven senior players for this clash - including their starting goalkeeper in Mark Flekken which is probably the biggest blow.
Arsenal are missing key personnel too with Arteta expected to be without Calafiori, Trossard, Odegaard, White and Merino for this first leg clash - though he has welcomed back Gabriel Jesus and Kai Havertz in recent weeks.
