After a hotly contested season, both in the league standings and top goalscorer tallies, the Championship returns this weekend for another season of drama and action. The top two goalscorers were separated by only three goals last season.
Sammie Szmodics topping the chart with 27 goals for a Blackburn side that, in much contrast, finished down in 19th spot, whilst Southampton’s Adam Armstrong racked in 24 goals and had the very last laugh, scoring the only goal in the Championship play-off final to send the Saints back to the English top-flight.
Now with six fresh sides entering, or returning to, the Championship, we will be taking a dive into all the aspects of this market in this article, alongside all of our EFL predictions ahead of this 24/25 season.

📊 Factors to Consider for the Championship Top Goalscorer
When looking to select a top goalscorer for a season there are a number of things to consider.
Many punters will go off a mixture of gut feeling, goalscoring history, and, possibly, expected team success. This can lead to some choices that, whilst they will of course have a chance, may not be the best value selections in the market.
We prefer to use data, historical trends, and analysis to provide us with our selections.
However, the last couple of Championship seasons are great evidence to demonstrate how difficult it can be to select the winner of the Championship Golden Boot.
Sammie Szmodics was a triple-figure price at this stage last season, and whilst he may not have been on the radar of many, he was guaranteed to be a regular starter as a central attacker for a team that was expected to challenge in the top half.
Chuba Akpom was also a big price in 2022/23. Whilst he was a difficult pick due to uncertainty around his position in the squad under Neil Warnock, what is interesting is that both he and Szmodics had never had a prolific season in the EFL, despite them both being in their late 20s. This suggests that a common fallacy is to go for players who have a proven track record. Whilst this is obviously not a negative, players who have a strong track record are often short in price. The overriding point is that players who don’t necessarily have double-digit goal seasons behind them shouldn’t be ruled out for that reason.
One of the keys to Akpom and Szmodics’ success is the number of minutes that they were able to play in the season. And whilst Aleksandar Mitrovic was an obvious winner for Fulham in 2021/22, he also played the vast majority of minutes for his team.
Here we see the top four scorers from the last few seasons in the Championship with their goals, xG, and minutes played:

Championship Top Goalscorer Tips 24/25
🥇 Emmanuel Latte Lath to Win Golden Boot (Middlesbrough)
The obvious tip perhaps, but there is so much in Latte Lath’s case that he simply has to form part of the portfolio.
Middlesbrough tend to err on the side of attacking football under Michael Carrick. Even with a sub-par season last year, Middlesbrough finished in the top six for goals scored and xG generated. They have recruited more defensive solidity this season, but have also brought in Aidan Morris in midfield and Delano Burgzorg in attack.
Morris will allow Hayden Hackney a bit more licence to get forward and create, and with Burgzorg adding extra directness in wide positions, it all points to potentially more attacking verve. This is good news for Latte Lath, who, after a settling-in period and a short injury in the early part of the season, was on fire in 2024.
Latte Lath ended the season with 16 goals from just over 2000 minutes, projecting this over 3000 minutes would see him around 24 goals if he could repeat that form. He had the third-best goals per 90 rate in the league in 23/24, and he goes into the season as undisputed first choice #9 for a team fancied to score goals and do well.
🏆 Emmanuel Latte Lath to win the Golden Boot
🥇 Josh Sargent to Win Golden Boot (Norwich)
One of the players who finished above Emmanuel Latte Lath in terms of goals per 90 minutes was Norwich’s Josh Sargent.
In a similar vein to Latte Lath, Sargent suffered an injury in the early part of the season and that severely disrupted Norwich’s season as they struggled terribly without the American. When he returned to the side, the difference was obvious and the Canaries flew up the table, ending in a top-six position.
From a personal perspective, as well as managing an impressive 16 goals in total, he averaged 0.78 goals per 90 rate. Sargent only managed 1850 minutes last season, if he can play over 3000 minutes this season he could actually underperform his ratio from last season but still be very much in the mix for the top scorer positions.
Sargent will undoubtedly begin the season as Norwich’s #9 and Johannes Hoff Thorup is known to be a modern attacking manager, so there is every chance that he is supported really strongly by his teammates playing on the front foot.
🏆 Josh Sargent to win the Golden Boot
🥇 Jack Clarke to win the Golden Boot (Sunderland)
We can see in the table that one doesn’t have to be a #9 to finish in the top goalscorer positions. Sammie Szmodics wasn’t necessarily an out-and-out forward last season, Crysencio Summerville played on the left for Leeds, as did Ben Brereton-Diaz for Blackburn, whilst Morgan Whittaker played on the right for Plymouth. If anyone in the Championship this year looks like a potential threat to break into the places for top goalscorer then it could be Jack Clarke.
The speculation around Clarke’s future seems to have died down somewhat this season, and whilst it could be a concern for January if he does score the number of goals that we would want to see, Sunderland are likely to want to keep him for the whole season.
Clarke has played a full pre-season for Sunderland under new manager Regis Le Bris and scored the most goals for the Black Cats. Sunderland still have a problem at centre-forward as we begin the season, and Le Bris will probably have to look towards Clarke as his key goal threat this season.
Clarke is highly likely to play a huge number of minutes if he is fit, so he fits that golden rule, and he is also likely to be on penalties. For a bigger price, he looks to be a potential dark horse to get into the places.
🏆 Jack Clarke to win the Golden Boot
🥇 Sinclair Armstrong to win the Golden Boot (Bristol City)
Armstrong made a move across to Bristol City from QPR, and it’s one that could prove to be a masterstroke by the Robins.
They did also buy Fally Mayulu, so there may be a touch of rotation, but the price more than compensates for this, and given the way that pre-season has gone, it seems certain that Armstrong will be given first refusal at the centre-forward role by Liam Manning.
Armstrong has found the net already for City in pre-season and has looked very fit and dangerous. He had a poor goal record for QPR, only scoring three goals from 1779 minutes last season, but as discussed at the top of the piece, it can just click for a player in a season despite previous underperformance.
This is a centre-forward, who will be first choice, in a team that isn’t expected to struggle and is improving as a footballer. Whilst he may be expected to provide an all-round game for Manning’s system, he is still the focal point and should get the chance to get enough goals to make his price look interesting.

📊 Key Facts and Trends from the Research
As there is to all betting selections, inside and outside of football, examining the recent trends in outright markets can give great context and guidance to future selections, and the top goalscorer for the 24/25 Championship season is no different.
Here are some interesting points that our expert wanted to highlight whilst conducting their research on the aforementioned selections:
- No player has finished in the top four of the goalscoring charts playing less than 3000 minutes in the season
- 14/17 (82%) scored 20 or more goals to be placed in this market
- The average position of clubs that finished with the top scorer is 6.75, albeit three of the four were in the top four
- The average position of a placed top scorer is 8.61, so it perhaps does help to play for a top-half team
- Only Joel Piroe has managed consecutive seasons in the place-paying positions
- It does help to have a high xG, but all players bar three (Adam Armstrong x2, Teemu Pukki, and Dominic Solanke) beat their xG totals
- It helps to be on penalties – Toney, Mitrovic, and Akpom were all penalty-takers
- Of the 17 players in the table, 10 could be described as a centre-forward, with others either playing as a false 9, as a wide forward, or a support striker
