Over 1.5 Goals

Chelsea have seen 2+ goals in each of their last five matches across all competitions. The youthful nature of the side, paired with the intensity of the schedule, makes for some pretty exciting matches with Chelsea seeing seven goals last time out as they ran out 4-3 winners over Wolves in the Carabao Cup.

Tottenham have seen 2+ goals in four of their last five matches across all competitions, with the exception of their 0-0 draw against Monaco in the Champions League. That game probably should have produced a few goals, with Monaco registering an xG of 2.45 and Tottenham pitching in with 0.88 themselves.

This is a fixture that regularly produces goals, with four of the last five head-to-heads seeing two or more goals. Only Tottenham (12) have scored more goals on the road than Chelsea (11) in the Premier League so far this season. The Blues can’t rely on the solidity of their backline, with Enzo Maresca’s side particularly struggling with long throws and physical duels in the box at the moment.

Enzo Fernandez to Commit 1+ Fouls

Fernandez has committed seven fouls across his eight Premier League appearances this season (0.89 per 90), with there being plenty of scope for this average to rise against Chelsea’s biggest rivals.

Tottenham don’t quite see this fixture in the same way as Arsenal being their main grudge match, but clashes against Chelsea can actually end up being even more feisty.

Fernandez contested 10 duels and committed two fouls in this fixture last season. Chelsea committed 11 fouls overall in the game, which is a tally you’d expect them to finish around here.

They could even exceed it, seeing as the Blues picked up their sixth red card in nine matches against Wolves during the week in the EFL Cup. Fernandez contested a further nine duels and committed a foul in Chelsea’s 1-0 win over Tottenham at Stamford Bridge last term.

Fernandez committed 52 fouls across his 36 Premier League appearances last season (1.59 per 90), so we can expect his current foul rate to increase, catalysed by the context surrounding this London derby.

Estevao to have 2+ Shots

Estevao showed his quality again in Chelsea’s 4-3 win over Wolves away from home in the EFL Cup. Chelsea were 3-0 up by half time, with Estevao getting the third of those goals with a delightful chip over Jose Sa, after Chelsea had pounced on a Wolves mistake. He’s already well up to speed for the level of the Premier League and can replicate the shot count he managed at Molineux here, with the Brazilian having three shots against Wolves.

Estevao has had 11 shots across his eight appearances in the Premier League this season. Just four of those have been starts, taking his average to 3.20 per 90. He’s maintained an even stronger shot record in the Champions League across his 135 minutes in the competition, with nine shots in this window (6.00 per 90). That average is obviously inflated by low minutes, but it shows promise when backing Estevao for shots here.

Estevao has scored three goals across his last five appearances across all competitions for Chelsea, with those goals coming against Liverpool, Ajax and Wolves. His confidence at the age of just 18 makes him a good player to back for shots and goal contributions, with the Brazilian slowly developing into one of Chelsea’s most important players.

Over 9.5 Corners

Both of these sides have utilised corners this season, so much so that they rank joint-2nd in the Premier League when it comes to corners won, with the London duo winning 56 each so far this term (6.22 per game). They are only eclipsed by Arsenal, who are a freakish side when it comes to corners and have won 67 so far this season.

Tottenham’s home games are seeing 12.50 corners per game, with Thomas Frank’s side making more of set pieces this season, in line with the general direction of travel in the Premier League.

They’re conceding 7.00 corners per game at home, which is a total only bettered by Fulham (7.25) and West Ham (9.0), so Chelsea should have an opportunity to flex their muscle when it comes to set pieces.

Seven of Chelsea’s 17 goals in the Premier League this season have come from set pieces (41%). Chelsea only scored 10 goals from set pieces across the entirety of last season, so it’s a marked improvement in their game, which can aid our selection here.

Chelsea may find it difficult to break down Tottenham in open play, with the Lilywhites boasting a more stubborn rearguard under Thomas Frank, so corners can offer a route to goal. Chelsea’s away games so far this season are seeing exactly 10 corners per game on average.

Moises Caicedo to be Shown a Card

Moises Caicedo has largely been able to avoid drama so far this season, with just one caution from his nine Premier League appearances. Caicedo’s role naturally comes with a risk of ending the season with a high card count, he collected 11 cards across his 38 Premier League appearances last season, which was the most of any Chelsea player.

What hasn’t changed for Caicedo is his foul rate. He’s committed nine fouls across his nine Premier League appearances this season (1.06 per 90) and will be tested by a steely Tottenham midfield here.

Caicedo lined up at right back in this fixture last season and may do the same here with Maresca leaning towards a three-man midfield of Romeo Lavia, Fernandez and Caicedo when all three are available. Caicedo committed two fouls in the game from 10 duels and was fortunate to avoid a booking.

Caicedo’s main opponent here is likely to be Xavi Simons, who has won six fouls across his six Premier League appearances this term (1.38 per 90). Simons maintained an average of 2.34 fouls won per 90 across his 25 appearances in the Bundesliga last term.

Joao Palhinha to have 1+ Shots on Target

Palhinha may not be the first name that springs to mind when looking at the shots on target market, but I think this angle offers a bit of value for a player who has had to be a threat for Tottenham in the final third, given that Spurs are currently missing key creative players.

Palhinha has already scored two goals for Tottenham in the Premier League, and has also scored in the EFL Cup.

That's already more goals than he managed throughout his entire spell at Bayern Munich and shows that he does get into the final third regularly. He’s had 10 shots across his nine Premier League appearances this season (1.30 per 90) with three of those attempts finding the target (0.39 per 90).

Seeing as Palhinha has scored from two of his three shots on target in the Premier League this season, it may also be worth backing him for a goal or a few shots here. Tottenham can utilise his physicality to their advantage against a Chelsea side that have been struggling when sides go direct against them in recent weeks - Wolves scored twice from long throw-ins against the Blues during the week, so this is an angle to keep an eye on.

Rodrigo Bentancur to be Fouled 1+ Times

I was quite surprised when looking through Bentancur’s fouls won numbers this season to find that the Uruguayan has only won one foul so far. You would expect this to be higher with the role he plays in this Tottenham side, and I think there is potential for it to rise here when considering the petulance and combative nature of this Chelsea side.

Chelsea picked up their sixth red card in nine games against Wolves during the week. I think this is something that will keep happening and isn’t too surprising - Chelsea finished top of the card rankings last season and have the youngest squad in the division by some distance. Bentancur will line up against Fernandez and Caicedo, as well as possibly Romeo Lavia if Maresca decides to opt for a three-man midfield.

Bentancur contested 10 duels in the most recent head-to-head meeting and was fouled once in that encounter. Chelsea committed just seven fouls on that occasion, but you would expect that tally to be higher here, seeing as they are the away side. Bentancur didn’t start in the 4-3 thriller between the sides in this fixture last season, but each of Dejan Kulusevski, Yves Bissouma and Pape Sarr, who lined up in midfield that day, were fouled at least once.

📈 Tottenham v Chelsea Form & Tactics

Chelsea have recovered well from a hectic period of the season to win five of their last six matches across all competitions. The defeat in this spell was a disappointing one against Sunderland at Stamford Bridge, which was a reminder of the vulnerabilities that still plague this Chelsea side even when they are on a decent run of form.

Chelsea progressed to the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup during the week with a 4-3 win over Wolves at Molineux. Chelsea went 3-0 up in the first half of that encounter and should have closed out the victory with greater ease. They let Wolves back into the game and looked really vulnerable from set pieces and direct balls into the box, which is something to keep an eye on here.

Tottenham crashed out of the EFL cup at the hands of Newcastle during the week, marking the second defeat in the last five matches for Thomas Frank’s side. Tottenham have been solid so far throughout his tenure, with their success coming on the road. Tottenham currently boast the best away record in the division but have only won one of their four home games this term.

Tottenham lost all four of their meetings against Chelsea under Ange Postecoglou, so Thomas Frank will be hoping to usher in a new era at Tottenham, who haven’t beaten Chelsea since 2023, when they managed a 2-0 win at home over Graham Potter’s Blues.

📔 Tottenham v Chelsea Formation & Team News

Tottenham have been lining up in a 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3 under Thomas Frank so far, with the main issue at the moment for Tottenham being creativity. Losing James Maddison and Kulusevski just before the start of the season was a massive blow to Thomas Frank, who has had to find solutions in their absence. Tottenham have been effective in finding these solutions, with late runs into the box from midfield players and set pieces.

Tottenham do have quite a lengthy injury list for this clash, with doubts including Cristian Romero, Bissouma, Dominic Solanke, Archie Gray and Destiny Udogie while Kulusevski and Maddison will remain sidelined until next year.

Chelsea line up in a 4-2-3-1 on paper, but this becomes a 3-2-4-1 when Chelsea are in possession. Maresca is very particular about this setup which became really clear when looking at his comments after Chelsea’s defeat to Sunderland, where he said that he had to scrap his whole tactical plan because the Black Cats were lining up in a back five, instead of a back four like he expected.

Maresca will have to be cautious that he doesn’t become too fixated on one plan or style of play, as adapting is essential to survive in the Premier League. Chelsea continue to be without Levi Colwill, who won’t return until April at the earliest. They did welcome back Liam Delap during the week, but he’s unavailable after being sent off against Wolves.
