Crystal Palace v Newcastle United Cheat Sheet
Crystal Palace v Newcastle United
Crystal Palace fans are certainly feeling less confident now than they were going into the World Cup break, a run of just 4 points in their last 6 games has slowly dropped them down the table and their buffer to the relegation zone is now down to 8 points. Palace are in a tough run though, they have played Chelsea, Manchester United and Spurs in their last 4 games and now have high flying Newcastle. Michael Olise’s return from an injury has been a massive positive for Palace, his free-kick in added time against Manchester United was stunning and showed what Palace had been missing in the first half of the season.
Newcastle are showing no signs of slowing down, their only disappointment this season really is the loss to Sheffield Wednesday in the FA Cup, but with Spurs falling off recently they are coming steadily closer to a Champions League spot next season. The return of Alexander Isak is also good news for Newcastle, he should be fit enough to start in this game after his goal off the bench against Fulham.
Isak has had very limited minutes at Newcastle, just 262 league minutes this season which is just under 3 matches worth of minutes. In his limited playing time though he has scored 3, had 8 shots and 6 shots on target.
This means in his limited minutes this season he has averaged 2.06 shots on target per 90, however, in every season in his career to date he has averaged at least 1.3 shots on target per 90 so don’t expect his numbers to drop this season. Isak is expected to start against Palace and the 70 million pound man will want to come back in and show he was worth his transfer fee.
Crystal Palace have allowed 4.75 shots on target per 90 over their last 4 matches against opposition of a level similar to Newcastle. Isak will be Newcastle’s major threat in this match and I he should get at least 1 shot on target in this match.
Palace have received 42 cards so far this season, the fifth highest in the league and face Newcastle who have drawn the fifth most yellow cards in the league. Crystal Palace have also committed the second most fouls of any team this season, the team average 12.1 fouls per match.
Newcastle’s central players love to run with the ball, Joelinton, Bruno Guimaraes and Willock are all in the top 5 for Newcastle’s most attempted dribbles this season and this has lead to opposition midfielder picking up plenty of cards. In Newcastle’s last 9 matches, an opposition centre midfielder has been booked 10 times and last time these two faced, both of Palace’s central midfielders were booked.
Jeffrey Schlupp will likely start in centre midfield for Palace in this match and is Crystal Palace’s highest fouling player of anyone to play at least 4 matches for Palace this season, averaging 2.17 fouls per match. Against Newcastle’s midfield that run with the ball and draw a lot of fouls, I expect Schlupp to commit at least 2 fouls in this match.
Newcastle love to have wingers running at opposition full backs and this means the likes of Allan Saint-Maximin and Miguel Almiron win Newcastle lots of corners from getting the ball and running at players down the wing.
This means Newcastle have won the second most corners per match of any team in the league this season, averaging 6.74. Crystal Palace concede 4.68 corners per match, but in their last league match against Newcastle they conceded 13 corners.
Both teams starting line-ups were very similar to what we can expect in this match here so I am expecting similar corner numbers for Newcastle again in this match.
In the previous fixture between these two teams in the league the match had an enormous 42 shots with a 23-19 split between the teams. For Crystal Palace to have 19 shots away from home is extremely impressive so at home in this game I would expect a good number of Crystal Palace shots.
Michael Olise’s stunner against Manchester United in Crystal Palace’s last game showcased his quality perfectly, the Crystal Palace man has averaged 1.76 shots per 90 from an average distance of 21.4 yards out. After his goal against Manchester United he will be full of confidence and will fancy himself if he gets any sight of goal from range.
That goal against Manchester United was just the second time he has had a shot from a free kick this season as Eze usually takes them, but after that goal he will make sure he is on set pieces in this game and will take the shot on. At 1.8 he is great value to have 2 or more shots in this match so I am backing him here.
