Viborg FF v Lyngby BK

Viborg, a strong home team, take on Lyngby who are yet to win a game this season. It’s a game between two of the smaller clubs in the league, but their situations are very different.

FC Nordsjælland v FC Copenhagen

The games between Nordsjælland and Copenhagen are always interesting. There is a short distance between Farum and Copenhagen, and the guests will be well supported for this match. 

The home side started the season in brilliant form, but their results have taken a dip recently. They lost 2-0 at home to Silkeborg last weekend, and before that they only managed 0-0 away against AaB. They have thus gone two games in a row without scoring, and they are struggling offensively. They don’t create enough chances, and their strikers aren’t exploiting whatever they get. Furthermore, they have started to create a large number of personal mistakes defensively. 

FC Copenhagen qualified for the Champions League Wednesday evening. This means they return to the biggest club tournament in the world for the first time in five years, and the players should thus have plenty of confidence. Since signing goalkeeper Matthew Ryan, Copenhagen’s defense has improved a lot, and they are also performing better offensively now. They are undefeated in their last three matches across all tournaments, and they have played some wonderful football here. 

Copenhagen are historically doing great against Nordsjælland as well. They are undefeated in their last 11 meetings, and have won eight of these matches. The last game in Farum ended 5-1 to FC Copenhagen.

Silkeborg IF v OB

The late game Sunday is a regular top versus bottom match. We have the league leader Silkeborg taking on OB who are second to last. 

Silkeborg disappointed Thursday evening by losing 2-1 on aggregate to HJK Helsinki in the Europa League qualification. This means, Silkeborg will have to settle for the Conference League group stage. It was obvious that Kent Nielsen’s troops lacked a bit of European experience, understandable since it was their first campaign in 21 years, but now they are back in the Danish league. Domestically, Silkeborg are coming off an impressive away victory at Nordsjælland, and that form should continue. Despite a lot of interest from bigger clubs, Silkeborg have managed to keep their star players, which shows that they truly intend on competing at the top this season. 

While things are looking great at Silkeborg, OB are in a terrible situation. The proud club from HC Andersen’s home town are second to last, and they have conceded a staggering 13 goals in six matches. Head coach Andreas Alm is likely to be gone very soon, unless things change drastically, as the players seem to have complete faith in the project. OB did win 1-0 at home against newly promoted AC Horsens last weekend, but the performance was poor anyway.

Brøndby IF v FC Midtjylland

The highlight of this round arrives on Monday evening when Brøndby IF take on FC Midtjylland. The home side are in a crisis, while it will be the debut for FC Midtjylland’s new head coach Albert Capellas, a former Brøndby assistant. 

The home side are in an awful state. They are coming off an embarrassing defeat away to AaB, and former Atletico Madrid player Daniel Wass must be wondering why he bothered returning to his old club. The Brøndby squad is in a mess, and sports director Carsten Jensen is under heavy criticism from fans and media for not investing in new players. Meanwhile, the club is in open negotiations with potential new owners, and everything seems to slowly be falling apart. 

At Midtjylland things have also been bad, but they are starting to look brighter. The Wolves have just presented Albert Capellas as new head coach. The Spaniard joins Midtjylland from FC Barcelona, where he worked as director of the La Masia academy before moving to Denmark. Capellas has previously worked at Brøndby too, as assistant to current Brentford manager Thomas Frank, and it’ll be interesting to see how his old club receives him. Capellas should give the players a big boost as he takes over Denmark’s arguably strongest squad.
