Fuelled by a passion for sport and a sharp instinct for uncovering patterns in data, beating the bookies became the perfect outlet for my competitive streak. Now I take pleasure in sharing my finds with ABC punters. I enjoy finding niche angles and betting value in a range of markets and leagues, my favourite being in Serie A.

In this article...

Nothing beats a cup underdog story, and with Round 2 of the EFL Cup set to kick off on Tuesday, I've put together a treble of teams who look like they could get a result against the odds.

Tuesday's EFL Cup Underdogs Tips

Fixtures for: Tuesday 26th August

Reading v AFC Wimbledon

EFL Cup

19:00

AFC Wimbledon Double Chance

Backing Wimbledon to win or draw against Reading looks a neat pick, particularly given that they did just that little over a week ago.

On that occasion, Wimbledon managed a 2-1 triumph away from home. Since then, The Dons bounced back from a narrow 1-0 defeat to league leaders Cardiff with an impressive 2-0 victory against Barnsley, and they look to be in fine form ahead of this meeting.

Unfortunately, but perhaps somewhat inevitably for Reading, their off-field perils have translated into on-field woes. They currently sit second-from-bottom with just two points to their name, neither of which they earned at home.

Over their five league games, the Royals have mustered no more than two big chances and 3.2xG, and with their strikers starved of chances, it’s far from a stretch to see Wimbledon getting a result here.

Burton v Lincoln

EFL Cup

19:45

Burton to Win

The bookies have Lincoln as the favourites for this all-League One clash, but I think Burton stand a strong chance of progressing to the next round.

On paper, it’s been a disappointing start to the season for the Brewers, who have picked up four points from their opening four games; however, the underlying figures tell a different story. Attack-wise, they top the league in terms of xG per 90, boasting an impressive 1.8, compared to Lincoln’s 1.02, which ranks 16th.

At the other end, it’s pretty even between the two - both sides have conceded 6.0xGa, though Lincoln have slightly edged things by shipping one goal fewer than Burton, having played one more game.

Significantly, the head-to-head record favours Burton, who have emerged victorious in five of their last seven meetings with Lincoln.

Bromley v Wycombe

EFL Cup

19:45

Bromley Double Chance

Bromley have been performing well so far this season, and are also strong contenders to cause an upset as they host League One strugglers, Wycombe.

The hosts have brought this selection home in all five matches in League Two to date, recording three wins and two draws. They exceeded their opponents in terms of xG in all five games, and beat Ipswich on penalties in the last round of this competition.

Wycombe, by contrast, have mustered just two points from their opening five games and, as such, this line would have landed in all five. The underlying figures offer little to suggest they've been unlucky, and early signs are that they could easily struggle away from home, against in-form opposition.
