🔵 Gonzalez to Maintain Momentum

After guiding Espanyol to survival in the top flight last season, Manolo Gonzalez was handed a contract extension over the summer. So far, that decision has paid dividends, as Espanyol find themselves in 5th-place following an undefeated start. Fixtures haven’t been easy too - Espanyol beat Atletico Madrid on the opening weekend, before taking a hard-earned point from the Reale Arena against Real Sociedad. 

Los Periquitos were impressive in that game, racking up 1.81xG from 14 shots, conceding just 1.09xG in return from the hosts. Just before the international break, Espanyol held on to a 1-0 victory against Osasuna, with the only goal scored by left-back Carlos Romero. 

Considering Espanyol were on just one point from three games at this stage last season, there has been a noticeable improvement in performances which should fill them with hope for the rest of the campaign.

🔴 Confidence Low in The Mallorca Camp

Meanwhile, Mallorca’s form has been a stark contrast. Los Bermellones are still yet to register a victory in the Spanish top flight this season, languishing in the relegation zone. However, it is worth noting that they have had a difficult run of opening fixtures. They started off with a 3-0 loss against Barcelona, during which veteran striker Vedat Muriqi and midfield stalwart Manu Morlanes were both sent off in the first-half. 

Their presence was sorely missed against Celta Vigo in the proceeding game, but Mallorca did manage to snatch a point with an 87th-minute equaliser from Mateo Morey. Just before the international break, Mallorca were narrowly defeated at the Bernabeu by a 2-1 scoreline - Muriqi returned from suspension, and managed to get on the scoresheet. 

Realistically, Mallorca weren’t expected to take many points from those opening trio of games. Given that they earned a respectable 10th-place finish last season, Los Bermellones will be looking to bounce back.
