In each fixture, there is the opportunity to back players who are likely to test the opposition goalkeeper on one or multiple occasions.
Who are the stars likeliest to do this? In an absolute sense, the players who go deep in the competition are likely to rack up big numbers, but over any given 90-minute match, the focus shifts toward the strikers who are most central to their respective sides.
🎯 Euro 2024 Top Players for Shots on Target
🏴 Harry Kane
Leading the way in this regard will be England captain Harry Kane. The Bayern Munich striker has been scoring at a rate of a goal per game with the Bundesliga giants, and though he has once again failed to win any silverware, he is coming off what was the best season of his career on a personal level.
Kane’s importance to Gareth Southgate’s plans is clear. As well as scoring eight goals, he had 11 shots on target in qualifying, which was 1.64 per 90 minutes and accounted for nearly 25% of England’s efforts on target.
Jude Bellingham will seek to alleviate some of the goalscoring burden from Kane. The Real Madrid star has had a spectacular first season in La Liga, where he has been unleashed in an attacking midfield role.
🇫🇷 Kylian Mbappe
Kylian Mbappe is another obvious example. The Frenchman scored nine in qualifying and had 38 shots, 16 of which worked the opposition keeper. Again, this was roughly 25% of Les Bleus’ total. France adopted a more attacking approach than England, though, and Mbappe had 2.19 shots on target per 90.
Mbappe comes into this tournament having scored a whopping eight goals the last World Cup. Didier Deschamps’ attacking system is built around getting the best out of him, and the 25-year-old has a selfish streak in him at times, backing his shooting ability when sometimes others are better placed.
🇵🇹 Cristiano Ronaldo
One man who has been there and done it before is Cristiano Ronaldo. Although playing in Saudi Arabia with Al-Nassr, he hit double figures in qualifying and Portugal continue to dance to his tune. He will take penalties and free kicks, and he will go for goal at every opportunity.
The Real Madrid and Man Utd legend had 2.38 shots on target per 90 in qualifying and remains the main man for his country, even if that role is now slowly starting to be disputed. Roberto Martinez has been clear in his selection that Ronaldo is the preferred no. 9 and with a quality supporting cast he should receive plenty of service.
🇧🇪 Romelu Lukaku
Another wily veteran worth watching in the shots market is Romelu Lukaku. No one scored more qualifying goals than the 14 he netted, which came from 18 efforts on target. Indeed, he mustered an astonishing 2.73 shots on target per 90.
The emergence of Lois Openda over the last two years has not eaten significantly into Lukaku’s game-time with the national team yet, with the on-loan Roma forward still very much the main man.
Lukaku and Belgian will sense an opportunity for redemption as they have not quite fulfilled their potential on the international stage, and the tournament where they are being touted for the crown the least may well suit the group in operating slightly under the radar.
🇵🇱 Robert Lewandowski
One final old stager who might be in his last major tournament is Poland’s Robert Lewandowski. Long regarded as one of the world’s best No. 9s, he may be constrained a little by those around him at the Euros as he needs a strong supply to threaten. In qualifying, he still managed 1.33 shots on target per 90.
Tough matches against the Netherlands, Austria and France suggest the Barcelona striker may find the pickings slim in Germany.
The Poles are one of the more unfancied sides this time around, but even against strong opposition Lewandowski is sure to find space.
🇩🇪 Kai Havertz
Julian Nagelsmann’s side have no qualifying data to work from but Arsenal’s Kai Havertz has been in rich form for his club side since the beginning of February and could potentially be a star.
He averaged 0.92 shots on target per 90 in the Premier League this season. However, there is reason to believe he’ll elevate that figure on the international stage for playing against weaker defences and in a more advanced position.
🇩🇰 Rasmus Hojlund
Manchester United striker Rasmus Hojlund will be a consistent option for shots on target if Denmark can perform as well as they did in Euro 2020. Having grown into his role at Old Trafford, he arrives at Euro 2024 very much as Denmark’s main goal threat. He scored seven in qualifying – approximately half the total of his country.
Hojlund also mustered 12 shots on target at 1.82 per 90, a little ahead of fellow rising star Jonas Wind on 1.52. An impressive conversion rate but one that suggests shooting confidence and accuracy will be there for his country.
🇪🇸 Lamine Yamal
Lamine Yamal is poised to bring his exceptional Barcelona form to the international stage. The 16-year-old managed two qualifying goals in just 205 minutes of action and can look forward to playing a significant role at the Euros.
Spain’s threat is likely to come from wide and the attacking midfield areas rather than through the middle, and this is illustrated by the fact that Yamal managed 1.74 shots on target per 90 in his qualifying outings, which is more than likely no. 9 Alvaro Morata (1.37).
🇮🇹 Gianluca Scamacca
A wildcard from the defending champions.
Gianluca Scamacca may rarely have featured in qualifying, but as Liverpool discovered to their cost in the Europa League, the Atalanta striker is electric right now. He only has one goal in 15 caps, yet the 25-year-old is in the form of his life and will be difficult to ignore for a starting berth.
He is a player with a high shot count when he does get on the field. In his brief forays in qualifying, he managed 1.88 shots on target per 90. This is higher than he managed in Serie A with Atalanta this season, but his dramatic recent improvement suggests it is sustainable going into the Euros next month. A flop at West Ham could yet be a star for Italy.
