⚔️ Gameweek 22 Review – 36 Points (46 Average)
First time being below average this season but there were a few shining lights to speak off, one surprisingly was in defence. Cucurella (9 pts) with a goal, huge attacking threat and a bonus point – though he should have had more as a goal-scoring defender. Unfortunately, the rest of the defence was poor, but it could have been different had Milenkovic’s goal not been ruled offside.
Midfield and forwards largely blanked except Fernandes (8 pts) who scored a penalty and even though Salah blanked, achieving a clean sheet this week was much welcomed. I am glad to see the back of GW22 but onwards and upwards with optimism and confidence.
It only takes one good GW to turn around your season so don’t be dismayed… we will get there together!
📋 Gameweek 22 Transfers Recap
Each week so you know FplVeteran is doing the demanding work for you, we revisit key decisions from last week’s review. This GW we revisit my Transfers’ Out. 5 points overall for a bonus, 4 player recommendation is a great return. Recently more players out than in have come to light but I’m positive that is about to change.

✅ The Best 2 Transfers IN for Gameweek 23
🇪🇬 Mohamed Salah – Liverpool (£13.7m, 70%)
I know, I know, 2 blanks in a row but don’t lose faith. Most of us FPL managers already have him but if not, don’t be put off by his recent scores; he can’t score double-digit hauls every single game. A tough, tight game v Forest and a close-fought fixture away to Brentford aren’t the easiest, but Ipswich presents a much easier challenge.
Next GW (24) he has a double GW and plays Bournemouth, Everton and Wolves… The benefits are endless. The most important factor to consider though is, it’s Mo Salah… Are you brave enough to go without over this period, because I am not!
🇸🇪 Alexander Isak – Newcastle (£9.4m, 59%)
He remains for a second week. Not many would have seen the 1st blank in 9 games coming against Bournemouth at St James’ Park, including me. But Southampton is the perfect fixture to get back on track with.
In the opening fixture of the season Newcastle beat the Saints but only won 1-0 with Isak registering a sole assist, this time I see a much higher return. Southampton perform much worse at home than away and have conceded 21 goals in 6 games, that’s a huge 3.5 goals per game!
Isak has 6 goals in the last 4 away including a hat-trick, so the chances of him blanking are zero to none. Now I think about it, the captaincy decision is a lot closer than originally thought. If you don’t decide to throw the armband on him that’s alright but ensure you at least own him this GW… He could go off!
🏴 Ollie Watkins – Aston Villa (£8.9m, 16%)
Form and Fixtures are staples for the FPL manager and Watkins has both. A very decent 30 point haul over the last 4 games and West Ham, Wolves and Ipswich over the next 3, both present a great time in which to get him in your teams.
If you have played FPL for a while you will know Watkins is a form player and when high on confidence, double-digit hauls usually follow. Earlier in the reverse fixtures v Wolves and Ipswich, Ollie scored 2 goals, bagged an assist and 2 bonus points so the omens look positive.
It gets me thinking and adds the question of whether or not we have the most suitable forwards for the next set of FPL fixtures… If not, perhaps it’s time you moved for him.
❌ The Best 3 Transfers OUT for Gameweek 23
🏴 Dominic Solanke – Tottenham (£7.5m, 8.2%)
Now out injured for at least a month with a suspected knee injury, it’s no surprise Solanke makes the Transfers Out list, but looking deeper it was time for him to go anyway. The 6th most expensive forward in the game was supposed to be value for money, but it has not come to fruition at any point this season.
A paltry 0.53 goal involvements per 90, only 7 goals from 18 starts and currently only the 11th highest-scoring forward (83 points), even behind Delap at Ipswich supports the idea his time was up regardless of the injury.
Add into the mix the tumultuous period Spurs find themselves in, then it’s no wonder over 100,000 managers have already taken him out. Don’t have a wasted forward spot and swap him with a better value-for-money asset… Or at least someone who is fit enough to play.
🇵🇱 Lukasz Fabianski – West Ham (£4.1m, 17%)
Now to a player I currently own. He is my backup keeper and has no chance of being selected over Raya unless an injury crops up. West Ham have a new manager in the form of Graham Potter and though winning their first game v Fulham, they were then soundly beaten by Crystal Palace and conceding 4 goals in 2 games doesn’t fill me with confidence in their defence.
Though I think it is a good appointment, and West Ham will perform better with him at the helm, ultimately it will take time for the team to adapt to his style of play and with fixtures v Aston Villa, Chelsea and Arsenal (all away from home) in the next 4, I can see much more pain before pleasure for West Ham.
I won’t waste a transfer on taking him out of my side, but if he is your number one keeper then it’s well worth the switch. Look to the likes of Alisson, Pickford or Sels.
🇪🇸 Robert Sanchez – Chelsea (£4.8m, 12%)
I have already highlighted this season just how poor a goalkeeper I consider Sanchez to be and in my opinion, not at a Premier League standard. Having made quite a few errors leading to goals in many games, his latest one may be the final nail in the coffin for his starting spot.
His understudy, Filip Jorgensen (£4.2m) is already playing all the cup and Europa League ties, so he is more than prepared to come in at a moment’s notice. He has only played 2 games this season, but I feel that could very well be about to change.
With Man City up next, what does Maresca have to lose by giving Jorgensen a chance, you never know, if he performs well this could be the start of his emergence at Chelsea. They may switch roles, and Sanchez will become the Cup/Europa keeper. That could mean we get a starting £4.2m asset for a top-6 side… Yes please!
Top Tip – Double GWs are upon us! It has been announced that Liverpool and Everton play 2 games instead of 1 in GW24. So start planning ahead to fill your team with players from one or both teams. Most already have Salah, but that still leaves 5 viable spots to capitalise on the opportunity..who will you choose?
🦸 Gameweek 23 Captaincy Selections
🇪🇬 Mohamed Salah – Liverpool (£13.7m, 70%)
Two blanks in a row, unthinkable! We are accustomed to Salah hauling week in, week out, but perhaps he is human after all? Up next is Ipswich fresh off a 6-0 battering at the hands of Man City, and Anfield is a daunting place to visit even when in the richest vein of form.
In GW1 Salah blew away Ipswich with a goal, an assist and all 3 bonus points and I anticipate this is at the lower end of the spectrum of what is possible for Salah this week. I can’t see Salah blanking 3 times in a row and if he’s back to even 50% of his current form then it’ll be double digits – as normal.
I just can’t see Salah not being involved in any attacking returns this week, so for me, he’s the number one captaincy choice.
Alternative Captain Options
Past the Salah selection, Isak v Southampton is the obvious other key choice, but there isn’t a standout third option. This leaves the door open to throw caution to the wind and go with a differential pick. Watkins v West Ham or Son v Leicester are good alternatives but it’s Mbeumo v Crystal Palace that I like the look of.
In the reverse fixture, he scored the winning goal and took home 2 bonus points, so he has form. If you’re still undecided then Anthony Gordon or Wissa are good underrated differential picks.
Top three for me this GW: Salah, Isak, and Mbeumo
👁️ FPL Veteran’s Vision and Verdict
With the DGW on the horizon, I want to maximise the opportunity and take as few hits as possible but still fill my team with 3 Liverpool players and one or two Everton personnel. Most of my team play away this GW, not ideal but with the home form of many teams so far this season being atrocious, I am confident of more than a few big scores.
Only real choice I have to make is Vardy or Elanga? Having only just brought in Elanga I would rather play him but Vardy playing a hopeless Spurs side shipping goals for fun seems a better prospect then a tough Bournemouth at the Vitality stadium.
I am heavily considering activating the Assistant Manager chip early (GW24) as it gives me the ability to utilise the remainder of my chips when I think is most optimal. If you have too many chips left at the end of the season, you may struggle to fit them all in and get the best out of them.
