Introduction
Hosts Germany are chasing a fourth European crown and first since 1996 and, naturally, there is a sense of expectation on the host nation, who post a formidable record in the European Championships. In 13 previous appearances in the finals, they have reached at least the semis on nine occasions.
Germany, though, are in a comparatively poor period internationally. Die Mannschaft have suffered group stage exits in successive World Cups while they were stopped in the round of 16 by England at Wembley at Euro 2020.
Now the pressure is on Julian Nagelsmann and his side to at least match the achievement of the 1988 West Germany side, which made the semi-finals in the only other occasion they hosted the competition.

Tournament Performance: Final
Germany should progress through the group stage of the competition without any particular problems. An opening match against an out-of-form Scotland should offer a perfect platform to get the campaign off to a strong start, assuming any opening-night nerves don’t get to the players – and they are experienced enough to ensure this is not the case. Switzerland and Hungary are also beatable opponents.
Germany are priced at 3.75 to reach the final on bet365, and with a fair wind behind them, that may just be possible.
Look for Kai Havertz to continue his strong form with Arsenal into the summer to score at least four goals, while Florian Wirtz has the capacity to lead the tournament in assists. Both are high in confidence, and that can only be a positive thing for the tournament hosts.
Germany Pre-Tournament Data
📖 How they qualified
Germany qualified as hosts and so will be playing their first competitive football since crashing out of the 2022 World Cup prematurely.
It has been a tumultuous period in their international history since. Hansi Flick’s two-year reign as national team boss ended last September amid a flurry of disappointing friendly results. Poland, Colombia, and Japan all beat Germany in successive matches as they went five without a win.
A couple of weeks later, Nagelsmann was appointed to the role. If his first four matches were mixed, there has been increased optimism about the nation’s prospects thanks to their March victories over France and Netherlands in successive games.
👕 Players to watch
Florian Wirtz has the potential to be a Ballon d’Or winner this year if everything clicks into place for him at Germany 2024.
Wirtz is likely to play as one of two false 9s in Germany’s setup along with Arsenal forward Kai Havertz and is a player capable of doing it all. Across all competitions, he recorded 38 goals and assists in 49 matches for Bayer Leverkusen last season. The 21-year-old only has one goal for Die Mannschaft thus far, but his time is coming.
Jamal Musiala is another bright young talent coming through in the Bundesliga, with the dynamic midfielder having distinguished himself with Bayern Munich.
Like Wirtz, the 21-year-old is a player who is capable of playing a variety of different roles but specialises playing in an attacking midfield role or, more probably for his country, off the left, and will be a key figure on this German side.
Offsetting this young and vibrant attack is an experienced midfield area that will be anchored by the reliable Toni Kroos and his club rival at Barcelona, Ilkay Gundogan. Both are serial winners and will underpin their hopes in the finals.
While Kroos is unlikely to figure too much in terms of goals or assists, look for Gundogan to pop up at key moments, as has been his habit in recent seasons with both Manchester City and Barcelona.
It is worth noting on the subject of Gundogan that in the France and Netherlands friendlies in which Germany were so successful earlier this year, he was deployed as an attacking midfielder, perhaps hinting towards his role for his country this summer.
