🔵 A Shadow of their Former Selves
After competing in the Premier League in 2019 and contesting a Championship playoff final in 2022, Huddersfield Town find themselves in League One following a turbulent last few years. Following their relegation to League Two in the 23/24 season, Huddersfield finished mid-table last season. They actually sat fourth in the standings going into February, with a promotion push looking likely, but slumped down the table having lost nine of their last eleven matches to conclude the campaign.
The Terriers have shown glimpses of reversing their fortunes this season, pulling off some notable upsets by eliminating Sunderland and Leicester in the EFL Cup already, but they come into this game having just drawn 0-0 to basement-dwellers Burton, after losing 3-1 against Bradford City.
Huddersfield will hope to provide their home support with something to cheer at the John Smith’s Stadium in this third-round clash, but it seems unlikely they will cause much trouble for the visitors.
⚫ Guardiola’s Men Looking Off-Colour
Man City had to settle for just a point at the Emirates last time out, as Gabriel Martinelli dinked over Gianluigi Donnarumma in the 92nd minute to send the Emirates into ecstasy. After Haaland’s goal in the ninth minute, City created very few openings and had just five shots in total.
Normally, Pep Guardiola demands that his side control possession in order to protect a lead, but he seemed content on Sunday to allow Arsenal to dominate, while his side sat deep. He made defensive substitutions, replacing Phil Foden with Nathan Ake and Haaland with Nico Gonzalez before the 80-minute mark - uncharacteristically negative changes from the Spaniard. Their inability to sustain possession for a meaningful amount of time has been a real issue for them this season.
City have won just two of their first five league games this season, languishing ninth in the Premier League standings, already eight points behind Liverpool.
📊 Huddersfield v Man City H2H
Prior to that 5-0 drubbing, the Terriers had lost three of their last four head-to-head encounters against Man City by an aggregate score of 11-2. Those were all Premier League fixtures prior to Huddersfield’s relegation in 2019.
