Despite their poor form this season, Newcastle come in as significant favourites, priced at just 1.12 to record victory at St James Park. Meanwhile, Bradford are the underdogs, coming in at 17.0 to cause a massive EFL Cup upset.

Over 2.5 Goals

With 17 goals scored from just nine league matches this season, Bradford have been the most attack-minded team in League One this term, although that has at times left them vulnerable defensively. The Bantams have conceded 11 goals in that time, with over 2.5 goals landing in nine of their last 10 in all competitions.

Although Newcastle have been less enterprising so far this campaign, Eddie Howe’s side can use this game as an opportunity to build some confidence going forward, especially with Anthony Gordon available again having served his suspension.

Will Swan to have 1+ Shots on Target

Will Swan has been a standout performer for Bradford this season, and already has six goals to his name, despite only starting six matches. It took just 12 minutes for the striker to open his account against Stoke in the previous EFL Cup round, as Bradford won 3-0 on their travels.

Prior to that, the Bantams beat Blackburn in round one of the EFL Cup - Swan scored after just four minutes in that game. The 24-year-old has been efficient with his chances so far this season, and that trend will have to continue if Bradford are to progress into the round of 16.

A Stuttering Start for the Magpies

Newcastle were incredibly pragmatic in their approach against Bournemouth last time out, as they set up in a low block at the Vitality Stadium and played out a goalless stalemate. The Magpies seemed content with a point, as they registered just four shots worth a total of 0.14xG. In return, they conceded just 0.56xG against the Cherries, who managed just three shots within the box.

That meant Newcastle have won just one game out of six in all competitions this season, and it came against basement-dwellers Wolves, who have lost every league game this season. Newcastle have been shut out in three games already, struggling in the final third without their talisman, Alexander Isak.

However, that match against Bournemouth was the third and final game of Anthony Gordon’s suspension, so Newcastle are likely to be a bit more front-footed in midweek. He scored the only goal for his side against Barcelona in the Champions League and looked a real threat all game.

🟠 Bradford on the Come up

Bradford were able to secure automatic promotion to League One in dramatic circumstances last season, winning 1-0 against Fleetwood with a last-gasp 96th-minute winner from Antoni Sarcevic. Since then, Bradford have adapted seamlessly to League One, and currently sit top of the division after nine games.

They come into this midweek EFL Cup game having just beat Cardiff, which was an incredibly impressive result. The hosts sat top of the table, having conceded just twice in eight games before facing Bradford, with both of those goals coming from the penalty spot.

But, the Bantams were too good for the Welsh side, and made light work of an efficient defensive unit. Bradford were 3-0 after 49 minutes, and Cardiff could only manage a late consolation goal. Having seen out their sixth win of the campaign, Bradford leapfrogged Cardiff in the standings and currently occupy top spot in League One.

📊 Newcastle v Bradford H2H

The last competitive meeting between these two sides came back in 2001, when both teams were in the Premier League. That game finished 2-2, while Newcastle won 2-1 in the reverse fixture at home.
