The magic of the FA Cup third round is back and with the FA saying all premier league teams must field a side for their fixtures, there could be some very interesting games over the next couple of days. For this match, I have landed on a 7/1 bet builder to hopefully make some nice profit in the early stages of the cup.

Hull have struggled against top-tier opposition in this competition. They are winless in 18 FA Cup matches against Premier League sides, whilst outside of the topflight. However, Hull may fancy their chances of reaching the fourth round this year as their opposition on Saturday is an Everton side in very poor form who they are unbeaten against in three of their last four home meetings. Although the sides have not met since March 2017.

Everton will be without key players like Richarlison, Yerry Mina and Andros Townsend for this fixture who are all sidelined with injuries. Equally, Alex Iwobi will miss out due to him being in the Nigeria squad for the African Cup of Nations. Despite these key losses, the Toffees have been busy in the January transfer market bringing in two new full-backs, Vitaliy Mykolenko, a personal favourite of mine on Football Manager, and Nathan Patterson from Rangers. I fully expect at least one of these new signings to start for Everton on Saturday as this is the perfect opportunity to integrate them before important league fixtures and with rumours of Lucas Digne’s potential transfer.

Despite the cup being neither team’s priority with Hull currently wrapped in a relegation battle and Everton’s players and staff under increasing pressure as a result of their form in the League. Both sides will likely field strong teams and this will make for a very interesting fixture.

For this game, I’ve picked out a bet builder at 7/1, along with a Cheat Sheet, to help you with your bets. Best of Luck!!

Everton to Qualify

Everton has won only one of their last 12 matches across all competitions this season. Because of this, manager Rafa Benitez is under a huge amount of pressure with some bookmakers having him as low as 4/5 to be the next Premier League manager on the chopping block. Due to this increased pressure, nothing less than a win in the cup is crucial to keep Benitez in the Merseyside fans good books. Equally, Everton has won four of their last seven games against Hull, all in the Premier League, with the last meeting in 2017 being a 4-0 home win at Goodison Park.

Everton also has a prestigious history in the FA Cup, lifting the trophy three times and will be hoping to build on reaching the quarter-finals last season by winning this tie against Championship opposition that sit just 4 points off the relegation zone having played one game extra. Similarly, despite having an excellent 6 game unbeaten run under their belts spanning the majority of November and the start of December, Hull have been poor in their last two fixtures losing to Nottingham Forest and Blackpool. Equally, despite indications that Grant McCann will field a strong side against the Toffees on Saturday, a long cup run is simply something that will add to the Tigers chances of relegation with a thin squad looking unlikely to add many additions in January with a takeover not yet confirmed. As a result of the cup being a low priority for Hull and the necessity for Benetiz’s side to secure victory, I expect Everton to qualify for the fourth round with a win on Saturday. Priced at 1.4 on Paddy Power.

Prediction: Everton to Qualify

Anthony Gordon to Score

In a game against Brighton in which Calvert-Lewin missed a penalty and the Everton defence was poor, especially in the first half, allowing Dan Burn an open header for the second, Anthony Gordon was exceptional. The 20-year-old not only scored both of Everton’s goals but won the penalty as well. His constant attacking pressure was Everton’s only real bright spark in the game and without him playing the scoreline would likely have been a lot less forgiving than its eventual 3-2 loss. Gordon’s goals were both well taken, despite the first taking a large deflection off the outstretched leg of Adam Lallana, the second was a great run into the box with a well-taken finish.

This game in the cup is the perfect opportunity for Gordon to build on that performance against a Championship level defence that has allowed 29 goals this year in the league and with Richarlison and Andros Townsend both out, Gordon could step up to fill those vacant roles. Similarly, with Calvert-Lewin struggling in his return and Rondon only scoring once in the league, Gordon may be needed to help Everton move forward in the cup. Gordon is valued at 4.0 on Paddy Power to score anytime.

Both Teams to Score

Everton has been poor defensively this season conceding 32 goals in 18 games and only keeping 3 clean sheets all year. With Yerry Mina still absent and Benitez likely looking to integrate at least one of his new January signings into the defensive line-up, I think it is unlikely that Everton will successfully keep a clean sheet in this game. Similarly, despite Hull having a fairly strong defensive record compared to the other teams in their league position, the Everton attack will likely be too strong for the Championship defence.

Paddy Power has both teams to score at equal odds with a team keeping a clean sheet at 1.85, likely due to the unpredictable nature of England’s oldest cup competition. However, due to Everton’s poor defensive record and the introduction of at least one if not two, new fullbacks in the starting 11 combined with Hulls strong attacking presence including the young talent of Keane Lewis-Potter and the experience of George Honeyman, I am backing Hull to find the net during the match and both teams to score at 1.85 on Paddy Power.

Prediction: Both Teams to Score
