This is the closest that Middlesbrough have to a derby match this season, but probably more importantly, it is a great chance for Boro to put some distance between themselves and a play-off contender.
Hull have been entertainment central in the Championship so far this season, so we can hope for more of the same on Friday night on TV.

📈 Hull v Middlesbrough Form & Stats
Hull have seen 60 goals in their Championship matches so far this season, a total bettered only by Coventry, the difference being that Hull's are exactly evenly split 30 for and 30 against. The Tigers come into this match having just dispatched a second-placed team with an excellent second-half performance at Stoke. That made it three wins and three defeats in their last six played.
Hull have relied a little bit on some sharp finishing so far this season; they have scored 30 from an xG of 24, and they have also conceded 30 from an xG conceded of 36, so this overperformance at both ends of the pitch. Indeed, Hull may have conceded the second-highest number of goals in the league, but their xG conceded is the worst.
Middlesbrough won Kim Hellberg's first match in charge, coming from behind to beat Derby 2-1. This restored Boro to the automatic promotion positions, but their results have been inconsistent recently. Performances have remained at a decent level; the midfield of Middlesbrough will always tend to keep them in matches.
Hellberg will need to find more in attack for Middlesbrough if they are to maintain their challenge for the automatics. They are ranked 20th in the league for expected goals for and 16th for shots on target. This is balanced by being third for expected goals against, though.
📔 Hull v Middlesbrough Formation & Team News
Hull have tended to play a 4-2-3-1 shape with the option of making that a 4-4-2 depending on how Sergej Jakirovic wants to use the second striker.
Joe Gelhardt has been super sharp this season and leads the way in the scoring charts despite not leading the line. This has covered the continued absence of main #9 Oli McBurnie, which continues into this match.
There is no more injury and suspension news for Hull, but I wonder whether Mohamed Belloumi has done enough to force his way back into the starting XI after impactful substitute appearances.
Middlesbrough continue to be beset by defensive injuries. Matt Targett had to fill in at centre back in a back four last time out, though he did do a good impression of a dominant aerial centre-back when scoring the equaliser from a header. It may well be that Hellberg wants to use a back four anyway, but he certainly doesn't have much choice right now, given the personnel available.
It will probably be a 4-2-3-1 shape for now for Middlesbrough. Dael Fry, Luke Ayling, George Edmundson, and Darragh Lenihan are still out injured. Aidan Morris is also likely to be missing in central midfield.
