Leeds welcome Liverpool on the back of their best two performances of the season so far - narrowly losing out to Manchester City at the Etihad, before beating Chelsea 3-1 at Elland Road.

Liverpool still look to be on the verge of collapse when watching them in their matches since the international break, though Arne Slot’s side have avoided defeat in both of their matches against West Ham and Sunderland since the break.

📈 Leeds v Liverpool Form & Tactics

Leeds’ 3-1 win over Chelsea at Elland Road last time out marked the end of a sequence of four losses for Daniel Farke’s side. Leeds’ challenge now will be consistency; their victories are so often followed by periods of poor form:

  • Leeds 1-0 Everton - Leeds fail to win their next four matches

  • Wolves 1-3 Leeds - Leeds fail to win their next three matches

  • Leeds 2-1 West Ham - Leeds lose their next four matches

This is becoming an unwanted pattern for Daniel Farke and suggests that Leeds can rarely find a baseline level of performance to see them through games. This record will encourage Liverpool, but the Reds will be acutely aware of the fact that Leeds have only lost two of their seven matches at Elland Road this season, with these defeats coming against Tottenham and Aston Villa.

Liverpool have avoided defeat since the international break, but have been far from convincing in their two matches against West Ham and Sunderland. Their backline looked a little tighter in these matches, with the Reds not allowing West Ham to have a shot on target and limiting Sunderland to an xG of 0.41 - but there are much bigger tests to come for this shaky backline.

📔 Leeds v Liverpool Formation & Team News

Daniel Farke has been desperately trying to come up with an effective system for Leeds, not only for their survival hopes - but to keep his job with rumours circulating that the Leeds hierarchy could be considering a switch. They’re likely to see how this latest shift plays out though, with Leeds’ switch to a 3-5-2 producing some really promising results.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Lukas Nmecha operate as the two strikers in this system and cause havoc due to their aerial ability and box presence. Chelsea could not handle the intensity and direct nature of Leeds who constantly sent the ball into the penalty area - completing 6 crosses and 20 long balls.

You could argue that this was a case of Chelsea being weak in their duels, but the same duo caused City serious problems in the second half of their 3-2 defeat to Guardiola’s side at the Etihad. Farke is likely to continue with this shape and personnel, as changing it would likely lead to Leeds once again failing to build on a positive performance.

Arne Slot’s recent changes to the Liverpool side aren’t to do with a change of system, but rather a change in personnel. Salah will always make headlines when he is dropped due to his legacy and stature at Liverpool, but Slot was right to drop him - he isn’t anywhere near the level we’ve seen him produce in the last few seasons and his mild workrate makes him a bit of a filler in the side if he isn’t coming up with goal contributions.

Liverpool still face an issue at right back with Conor Bradley and Jeremie Frimpong still sidelined which should mean that Joe Gomez continues there. Leeds don’t have many injury issues, though Sean Longstaff is expected to miss this game.

📊 Leeds v Liverpool Key Stats

  • Leeds have only lost two of their seven matches at Elland Road this season.

  • No side has lost more games in the top half of the Premier League than Liverpool (6)

  • Leeds have not won back to back games in the Premier League this season.

  • Liverpool’s clean sheet against West Ham in their last away match, was only their fourth clean sheet of the season.
