Cristiano Ronaldo to Score Anytime

Ronaldo is on a personal mission to become the top all time goalscorer in the World Cup Qualifiers. This achievement may seem arbitrary to most, but Ronaldo is driven by the need to break every record he can and he’s only two goals away from this one.

Ronaldo scored two goals against Armenia last time out and has scored in each of his last four matches for Portugal. This includes scoring against Spain, Germany and Denmark which is a record that slightly challenges the narrative that he can no longer perform at this level.

I do think it’s a massive risk having a 40 year old as your starting striker heading into a World Cup, but in fairness Ronaldo is not every 40 year old. With 140 goals across his 222 caps for Portugal since 2003, it’s a solid option to back Ronaldo to continue his goalscoring form on the international stage here.

Portugal to Win

Portugal are usually pretty dominant in these qualifiers. They won all 10 of their qualifying matches for the European Championships last year and could look to do the clean sweep again when looking at the sides in their group.

This will definitely be Portugal’s toughest game of the group, but I still expect them to have the quality to navigate it without too many issues. Hungary are solid without being spectacular and should be cut apart by the quality that Portugal have in attacking areas, a quality that Hungary will struggle to match throughout the contest.

Over 2.5 Hungary Corners

Hungary’s main threat here will come from set pieces. They don’t create much from open play and rely on the delivery of Szoboszlai partnered with the aerial threats of players like Orban to try and hurt the opposition. Basically, if Arsenal were an international side it would be Hungary.

Hungary scored from a corner against Ireland in their 2-2 draw last time out. Szoboszlai got the assist with that being Hungary’s only corner of the game. This was because Hungary were reduced to 10 men early on in the second half which allowed Ireland to grow back into the game and dominate it.

  • Hungary let a two goal lead slip against Ireland last time out, though they were reduced to 10 men in the second half.

  • Portugal won all 10 of their qualifying games in preparation for the European Championships a few years ago.

🟢 Big Test For Hungary

Hungary will have been slightly disappointed with their performance against Ireland last time out.

They went 2-0 up inside 15 minutes thanks to goals from Vargas and Sallai but a red card in the 52nd minute to Roland Sallai resulted in Hungary giving up their 2-0 lead and leaving Ireland with just a point after Adam Ideh scored a 93rd minute equaliser.

It’s hard to take too much from that game due to the sending off changing the landscape of the fixture. However, Hungary showed that they can be a threat from set pieces and still have time to get a real foothold in this group.

They’ll believe that their first half performance was enough to suggest that they are the next best side in this group behind what many expect to be a dominant Portugal side in this group.

🔴 Portugal Thrive in Qualifying Matches

Portugal ran out 5-0 winners over Armenia last time out to kick off their qualifying campaign following their win in the Nations League final against Spain earlier in the year.

They’ll be hoping that triumph is a good omen for success with the World Cup taking place next summer which is where the real test will be for Roberto Martinez and this side.

Portugal’s performances in these qualifiers won’t really ever be under much scrutiny. They are expected to top the group with most waiting for the main event next year before judging the true quality of Portugal, and more importantly of Roberto Martinez who is yet to convince me that he can be the man to help Portugal finally claim the World Cup.

📊 Hungary v Portugal H2H

The most recent meeting between these sides was back in 2021 when Portugal ran out 3-0 winners. Crisitano Ronaldo scored twice in that game.
