Inter Milan v Lazio

🗓️

Kick Off: Sunday 18th May at 19:45

🏆

Competition: Serie A

  • Inter Milan have beaten Lazio to nil in four of the last five meetings

  • Lazio need a positive result to stay in the race for a Champions League spot

  • If Inter Milan lose and Napoli beat Parma, Napoli will be crowned champions

Inter’s penultimate match against Lazio is pivotal in the title race, especially with Napoli enjoying the easier run-in.

With the Champions League final looming just six days after the season ends, Inzaghi has been rotating heavily to protect his squad. But against Lazio, complete focus is non-negotiable.

Lazio, still chasing a Champions League spot, will pose a real threat, and with Inter still a point behind Napoli in the Scudetto race, dropping points could be fatal.

It’s a similar story for the visitors, who currently occupy 5th position, but remain level with Juventus, albeit behind due to the head-to-head record between the sides.

Looking in the other direction, city rivals Roma are just one point behind, with Coppa Italia winners, Bologna, also in hot pursuit.

For the first time all season, Inter appear to have struck the perfect balance between rotation and results. Prompted by their progression in the Champions League, they've managed to keep key players fresh without compromising on points, setting the stage for a full-strength, high-intensity lineup against Lazio before likely easing off in the final round ahead of the UCL final.

This freshness could translate into a fast start, something Inter already excel at. They’ve found the net before half-time in 72% of their home games, averaging 1.11 goals in the opening 45 minutes.

Defensively, too, the extra rest may pay dividends. Inter have shown vulnerability late on in games, but sharper legs could help them close this one out. They’ve kept clean sheets in around two-thirds of their league wins and have shut out Lazio in four of their last five clashes with them, winning four times.

🔵 Inter Return to Form Following Busy Schedule

Inter have seemingly battled with fatigue throughout the season, having overworked the players during pre-season and perhaps misjudged how effective their squad depth would prove.

This led to a sharp downturn in the latter stages of the season, as they juggled the league, Coppa Italia, and UCL.

A four-game winless streak featuring three losses, including two in the league, dented their Scudetto prospects, but with Napoli also slipping up, they are still very much in the race.

Since that rough patch, Inter have returned to winning ways, reigning victorious in each of their last three games, with their reserves largely filling in for the two in Serie A.

It remains to be seen exactly what kind of lineup Inzaghi will put out on Sunday, but if it’s as strong as we suspect it might be, Inter should be able to exert their superiority.

Business as Usual for Lazio

Somewhat atypically for the Azurri, Lazio have endured a remarkably consistent campaign, rarely fluctuating between patches of form.

A solid, unbeaten run of six games merits respect, particularly given the run included clashes with Juventus and high-flying Roma (both draws).

Most recently, they played out an entertaining 1-1 draw with Juventus, in which they were firmly the better team but only after Kalulu was sent off.

A 96th-minute equaliser was enough to remain in the race for 4th position, but in all honesty, Lazio created next to nothing until Juventus went down to 10 men in the 60th minute.

This has been a recurring theme in their recent matches, with Lazio grinding out impressive results, but without paying particularly well.  They might have to step things up a notch if they hope to disrupt Inter’s title charge.

📊 Inter Milan v Lazio Head-to-Head Key Stats

One thing that’s been abundantly apparent this season is that in head-to-head clashes, Lazio have not been able to compete with Inter.

These sides have already met twice this season, the first time at Stadio Olympico, where Inter trounced them 6-0 in the Nerazurri’s biggest win of the season.

Out for revenge, Lazio then travelled to the San Siro for the Coppa Italia quarter-finals, where they once again failed to score, ultimately losing 2-0, despite playing a decent game.

Looking further back, Lazio are winless against Inter across their last five meetings, managing a single draw and losing the rest.
