We’re now into the second week of the NFL season, and I think there’s great value on this week’s Gem bet, purely because of what happened in Week One.
Early in a new NFL season, the question is always how much we go on recent events and how much we base on what we’ve seen over a longer, extended period, and this bet is one of those cases. Last Sunday, the Jaguars held Panthers’ quarterback Bryce Young to just 154 passing yards, while the Browns throttled the Bengals’ offence and kept Joe Burrow to just 113 passing yards. Please do not read too much into these two events.
The Jaguars did well to shut down the Panthers and Young, but this Carolina team are not a good one. Their offensive line is far from elite, and Young, despite ending last season better, has struggled since coming into the NFL and is a long way from being a top tier starter. No team in the NFL gave up more passing yards per game than the Jaguars last season, and their defence this year isn’t vastly different.
On the flip side of that, the Browns have a solid defence, and Joe Burrow did struggle against them. However, we need to judge Burrow on more than just one bad performance to start the season. Last season, Burrow averaged 289.2 passing yards per game and should cover Sunday’s total with ease, with the whole offence likely to show improvement.
