Juventus v Atalanta Cheat Sheet
Juventus v Atalanta
Matchday 19 in Serie A is a bit of an unusual one as it stretches from Saturday right through till Tuesday with AC Milan vs Lazio taking place that night. That could have been labelled the game of the weekend, but given it isn’t at the weekend, we’re focusing on the other contender, Juventus vs Atalanta.
Over the past few years, these two teams have been at opposite ends of the entertainment spectrum. Juventus have not been a joy to watch, whilst Atalanta would routinely score silly amounts of goals, and concede silly amounts too.
This season, Juventus have stayed true to that stereotype whilst Atalanta have become a bit more reserved and are no longer a guarantee of entertainment.
That being said, they seem to have rediscovered that carefree side to themselves in the last week. They battered Salernitana 8-2 last weekend and then in midweek they faced Spezia in the Coppa Italia and won 5-2. Those are 2019 Atalanta scorelines.
That form could make this a more entertaining game than initially expected because Atalanta could throw caution to the wind in Turin and decide to fly at Juventus, forcing the Bianconeri to fight back and ensure they get an essential three points to keep any faint title hopes alive (pending the outcome of their appeal against the 15-point deduction the club was hit with on Friday).
With a player like Federico Chiesa back among the goals, there is a serious outlet on the break if Atalanta do commit too many bodies forward.
The events of the last days and weeks surrounding the board at Juventus means that this game is a must-watch, to see how the fans and players respond to their point deduction and to the suspensions of key parts of the club hierarchy. Hopefully this will open up the game as the usually rigid Juventus will be far from the preparation level they would usually hope to reach.
If this game was a couple of weeks ago, pushing both teams to score would look like madness. As it is right now though for a couple of different factors, it is not the worst idea at all. Both teams are in a position of wanting to climb up the table rather than consolidate, so a draw is not really the aim for either, particularly not Juventus.
Juventus may not be known for banging in the goals this season, but throwing Federico Chiesa back into the mix adds a totally different option for the Bianconeri and it could bring even more out of Arkadiusz Milik and Angel Di Maria who are both expected to start the game on Sunday.
There is plenty of firepower there for Juve at times those three players could all bring the best out of each other and unpick what is a pretty shaky Atalanta defence at the best of times.
As for Atalanta, there will be opportunities for them to fly forward after a period of Juventus pressure in this one and they certainly have the tools to make that a highly effective strategy. The pace of players such as Ademola Lookman and Jeremie Boga, coupled with the power and finishing ability of Rasmus Hojlund, means that there are goals in this Atalanta team again when they are confident. Given the last two games with a yield of 13 goals, they are certainly confident.
It has been an incredibly tough year or so for Federico Chiesa after he suffered a serious knee injury that has kept him out for around nine months.
He was the bright spark in the Juventus side and the player they looked for to grab a game by the scruff of the neck and make it something happen when the team really needed it.
He carried that form into EURO 2020 and he was a huge part of the reason why Italy ended up winning the trophy at Wembley against England. He looked poised to become one of the best players in the world and then the injury happened.
Since his return he has made some appearances off the bench and has clearly been trying to get up to speed again. Against Monza in midweek, that changed.
Juve were headed for extra time in the Coppa Italia round of 16 but then Chiesa picked up the ball and ran at the Brianzoli defence. He then unleashed a superb shot into the top corner and dragged his side into the next round.
He is expected to be starting against Atalanta and he will be absolutely desperate to get that feeling back again in a Serie A match having been out for so long. If he can perform in this one, it could be a sign that Juventus have got a new level of threat going forward for the rest of the season.
It may be a surprise to many Premier League fans that Ademola Lookman is so important to this Atalanta team, but he is one of their major creators this season.
His raw pace and seemingly highly improved finishing ability means that he is one of the major threats that Juventus will be preparing for coming up to this fixture at the Allianz Stadium.
There may well be spells of this game where Atalanta are absorbing a huge amount of Juventus pressure and that is where Lookman could come into his own.
The Juve midfield and defence is not blessed with pace, meaning a counter attack that ends with one of Lookman and Rasmus Hojlund assisting for one another is a serious possibility.
In all competitions this season, Lookman has got an extremely impressive 11 goals and three assists so he is certainly a good pick to be among the action against the Bianconeri if Atalanta are feeling as prolific as they have been in their last two games.
There was a time earlier in the season where it looked like the attacking burden was eighing too heavily on Lookman with Duvan Zapata out injured, Hojlund not yet firing, Luis Muriel absent and Jeremie Boga struggling to find any form.
Hojlund is now playing extremely well and even Boga is showing some signs of improvement, meaning more of Lookman’s running and creativity is yielding results for the team as a whole.
