FC Koln v 1. FCK
Kick Off: Sunday 18th May at 14:30
Competition: 2. Bundesliga
Köln need a draw to get promoted in second place.
73% of Köln’s games and 61% of Kaiserslautern’s games have seen less than 4 goals.
Köln ground out a solid 1-0 victory away from home in the reverse fixture.
With the 2. Bundesliga race set to go down to the wire, Köln remain firmly in contention for both the title and automatic promotion to the Bundesliga.
They’ve accumulated 58 points, which is one fewer than Hamburger SV, who lead the way, but also three greater than SV Elversberg and Paderborn, both of whom have sufficient goal difference to displace Köln, should they finish level.
As such, Köln's mission is simple. Given their comparatively poor goal difference, a draw would suffice to guarantee promotion, but only a win could see them lift the title, although this is dependent on Hamburger SV dropping points to Fürth.
The stakes could also be high for Köln’s opponents, FC Kaiserslautern.
At present, they occupy 6th position with 53 points to their name, however, the unlikely prospect of securing a promotion play-off clash remains a distant possibility.
They would need not only to win against Köln, but would also require three other results to go their way, so while it’s not technically over, the squad will be grounded by reality ahead of this clash.
⭐ FC Koln v 1. FCK Predictions and Best Bets
Köln are the merited favourites, and backing them to win at 1.44 could still present value despite the short odds. This game is the most important of the year for them as they look to secure promotion, and with Kaiserslautern performing poorly, Köln should have enough in the tank to get across the line.
Unfortunately for neutrals, we think this might be a low-scoring affair, with under 3.5 goals surely overpriced at 1.65. Since the start of the season, 73% of Köln’s games have seen the net rippled on fewer than four occasions, as have 61% of Kaiserslautern’s. The selection has been particularly reliable in recent items, coming home in 16 of Köln’s most recent 17 in the league, and 11 of Kaiserslautern’s previous 14.
⚪ FC Köln Battle With Fatigue-Induced Inconsistency
Having been a dominant force at the start of the season, Köln have since trailed off, and while still maintaining a respectable record, haven’t looked quite as threatening.
Their last 12 matches have yielded 5 wins, 3 draws, and 3 losses, although a late return to a four-back might have patched things up a bit.
Most recently, Koln recorded a 2-1 victory over FC Nürnberg, although this scoreline certainly doesn’t flatter them.
In reality, they put out a dominant display, creating 6 big chances and 2.77xG while conceding no more than 0.66xGa.
Despite only enjoying 52% of possession, Koln had complete control of the game, using their time on the ball productively and firing off 23 shots to Nürnberg’s 5.
🔴 FC Kaiserslautern’s Slump Derails Promotion Hopes
FC Kaiserslautern had also looked a dominant force over the majority of the season, but three back-to-back losses between gameweeks 28 and 30 have dashed their hopes of playing top-flight football next season.
Unfortunately, Kaiserslautern haven’t looked quite the same since, even if the results (2 wins and a draw) would tell you otherwise.
Most recently, Kaiserslautern recorded a win over Darmstadt in what was a pretty evenly matched affair that could have gone either way.
Previous to that, a win versus Karlsruher SC drastically fails to convey the flow of the game, which Karlsruher dominated, creating 3.07xG to Kaiserslautern’s 1.23.
Typically, these results aren’t sustainable, and it doesn’t feel like Kaiserslautern have emerged from their rough patch, even if it’s not immediately apparent.
📊 FC Koln v 1. FCK Head-to-Head Key Stats
Seeing as though Köln were only relegated last season following an extended stay in Germany’s top flight, the reverse fixture is the only recent meeting between these sides.
On that occasion, Köln ground out a solid 1-0 victory away from home, in a match that was from being a spectator’s dream.
Kaiserslautern controlled 67% of possession but failed to convert this into chances, creating no more than 0.58xG, while Köln managed 1.39.
That said, following Köln’s sensational announcement to sack Gerhard Struber with just two games remaining, Friedhelm Funkel has taken over, meaning this will be a new matchup, and tactics may vary.
