Bournemouth to Win

Leeds have done well at Elland Road so far this season, but they have come up against two passive sides in Everton and Newcastle that haven’t really gone after them. Bournemouth will be the exact opposite in their approach and their away performance against Tottenham really stood out to me.

Andoni Iraola’s side pressed Thomas Frank’s team into oblivion, not letting them have as much as a shot in the first half of their trip to North London. They won the game 1-0, but could have scored a few more with 20 shots in the game, six of which found the target. I think Leeds will struggle to deal with this intensity, which is often the critical factor as to why newly promoted sides struggle in the Premier League.

Bournemouth have won three of their five Premier League games so far this season, with their only loss coming on the opening day of the campaign against Liverpool. Bournemouth avoided defeat in 14 of their 19 Premier League games last season, scoring 35 goals across these matches (1.84 per game).

Bournemouth Over 1.5 Cards

As I touched on in the notes for Bournemouth to win the game, this is the most aggressive side in the Premier League, which is a trait woven into their playstyle under Andoni Iraola.

Bournemouth ended the 24/25 season with the highest foul average of any side in the Premier League (13.8 per game), and only Chelsea (99) picked up more yellow cards than the Cherries (97 - 2.55 per game).

Bournemouth have started this season in similar fashion with an average of 11.8 fouls committed per game and 14 yellow cards - more than any other side in the league across the opening five games (2.8 cards per game).

🟡 Leeds Seeking Back-To-Back Wins

Leeds claimed a crucial 3-1 win over Wolves last time out in what was an early relegation six pointer. It was their first win since the opening weekend of the season, where they ran out 1-0 winners over Everton at Elland Road.

Leeds had failed to score in three of the four games since that victory, so this win will do wonders for their confidence as they enter an important period before the international break, with back-to-back home games against Bournemouth and Tottenham.

Lucky is probably not the word to describe Leeds’ win over Wolves last time out, but the underlying numbers would suggest that it had a degree of fortune about it. Leeds only had six shots in the game, with half of them ending up in the back of the net, with a total xG of 0.48. Leeds do still struggle when it comes to creating chances.

Leeds’ games at Elland Road will be crucial to their chances of staying up this season. They’ve already beaten Everton and taken a point from Newcastle on home soil.

🔴 Positive Signs For Bournemouth

Bournemouth have made a brilliant start to the season and could find themselves cemented in the top half of the table by the international break, with a fixture at home against Fulham to follow this encounter.

Bournemouth have lost just one of their five Premier League matches this season, with that defeat coming on the opening day of the season against Liverpool, at Anfield. Andoni Iraola has done a fantastic job with the Cherries and I don’t think he’ll stay in the role beyond the end of the season, with the turmoil at some of the big clubs around Europe at the moment.

Bournemouth were solid on the road last season, avoiding defeat in 14 of their 19 away matches. They scored 35 goals across these games, which may be a scoring power that Leeds struggle to match, given their issues in front of goal of late.
