Could there be a title race in the Championship?
Leeds would move to within six points of Leicester if they were able to defeat the Foxes at Elland Road on Friday night. Whilst it is of more importance to Daniel Farke and his team to put some distance between themselves and Ipswich and Southampton, chasing Leicester down is still a big incentive for Leeds’ season.
Leicester are still on course for one of the best Championship seasons of all time, so the discussion to follow seems somewhat hollow. However, it is still the case that there is something amiss at Leicester at the moment.
It was only a couple of weeks ago that Maresca mentioned leaving if his vision of playing was not wanted. This came as a result of fans’ impatience at what they perceived to be slow possession play, but Maresca is very much a process-driven manager who is wedded to this style of play, and one cannot doubt its effectiveness in the results that Leicester have produced so far this season.
If Leicester avoid defeat here then surely they will have enough of a cushion to cruise to the title and a return to the Premier League. However, with three really strong teams, and squads, following them, all of whom are going at around 2pts per match, there is no room for complacency. And yet, there is something a little off about the Leicester performances of late, and Leeds look to be in shape enough to capitalise.
This is going to be an absolute thriller with great significance for what the table will look like at the top at the end of the season. We are prepared with all the stats and insight that you need to build a bet ahead of kick-off.

🏆 Match stats: Leeds the stronger outfit in the season-long data
As well as being the top two in the league standings, Leeds and Leicester also sit atop a lot of the performance metrics in the Championship.
Starting with Leeds, it is important to note that they are unbeaten at home, winning 12 of their 16 home Championship matches. They have conceded only 11 in those matches and scored 35, over two a game.
From an attacking perspective Leeds are 2nd to Leicester on overall xG created over the course of the season. They are just above Leicester with 5.4 shots on target per match, compared to the Foxes’ 5.2.
Leicester generally shade the attacking metrics though with the most big chances created and, ultimately, most goals scored in the league.
Leeds edge things defensively with the joint most clean sheets and best xG against record, meaning that they have conceded the lowest quality of chances in the league. However, the teams are equal in the total number of goals conceded, 26 in 33 matches.
It is the home form and defensive solidity that makes Leeds a tough team to bet against in this match.
Predictions:
⚽ Leeds to win @ 2.0
⚽ Leeds (-1 handicap) @ 3.75
🎯 Shooting stats: Summerville the big threat for Leeds
Crysencio Summerville has had an outstanding season by any measure.
The young Dutchman has really dominated the Championship with his goals, direct running, and determination to make an impact. In terms of shooting, he leads the team, in terms of regular players, for shots taken per match (3.4) and also shots on target (1.28). If Leeds are to be on the front foot here, then Summerville will be a key man.
It is, perhaps, indicative of the difference between the two teams so far this season that none of the Leicester squad average over a single shot on target per match.
Perhaps the most reliable choice in the Leicester outfit is Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall. The midfielder has been the driving force behind the team this season and has come up trumps when his team have needed him. He is also the most likely forward player to play the full match, giving him a better chance of landing a shot or two on target.
Predictions:
⚽ Crysencio Summerville to have 1+ shots on target @ 1.40
⚽ Crysencio Summerville to have 2+ shots on target @ 2.80
⚽ Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall to have 1+ shots on target @ 2.10
🚩 Corners stats: Leeds worth backing despite favouritism
Even the dominant league leaders cannot defeat the corner gods. Leicester concede more corners than they earn away from home, and by quite the margin.
The Foxes average only 3.56 corners away from the King Power, this is actually the joint-third lowest total in the league, tied with Preston and with only Millwall and Rotherham below them.
Leicester are in the top half for away corners conceded though with only 5.38 on average, this suggests that a low total could be likely.
This is compounded by Leeds’ stats at Elland Road. An average of less than nine corners per game is the second-lowest in the Championship behind Cardiff. This is because Leeds restrict their visitors to 2.22 corners on average.
This all points towards Leeds having the advantage and adding them onto the bet builder looks a good option.
Predictions:
⚽ Over 4.5 Leeds corners @ 1.44
⚽ Leeds corner match bet @ 1.40
🛑 Fouls stats: The battle of the midfield could yield some fouls
Ilia Gruev has done well to make a positive impression and retain a place in the Leeds team. However, he is also the player with the highest fouls per minute ratio, albeit with a lower sample size than most of the squad.
He will be playing directly against Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, Leicester’s most fouled player. Dewsbury-Hall is fouled over 1.5 times per game according to the data, and his driving runs through midfield will need to be dealt with by Leeds.
Harry Winks may also have to deal with something similar whenever Georginio Rutter picks up the ball for Leeds. Despite being a forward, Rutter often drops deep into that advanced midfield position to pick the ball up for his forays forward. Rutter is by far the most fouled player in the match and Winks also averages over a foul a game, he could be the man used as cover against Rutter.
Predictions:
⚽ Ilia Gruev to commit 1+ fouls @ 1.18
⚽ Ilia Gruev to commit 2+ fouls @ 1.91
⚽ Harry Winks to commit 1+ fouls @ 1.25
⚽ Harry Winks to commit 2+ fouls @ 2.20
