Man City v Liverpool
📅
Kick Off: Sunday 23rd February at 16:30
🏆
Competition: Premier League
📺
Watch Live: Sky Sports Main Event
Man City welcome Liverpool to the Etihad with the picture very different this time around. Liverpool are chasing their second Premier League title and look in pole position to secure English football’s most prestigious prize in Arne Slot’s first season in charge. The Reds will be slightly shaken by recent draws against Everton and Aston Villa, which may have cast a bit of doubt into them.
Man City look tired and out of ideas, Pep Guardiola’s side have not been able to get close to the dominance they’ve displayed over the rest of the Premier League in recent seasons and crashed out of the Champions League against Real Madrid in midweek.
⭐ Man City v Liverpool Best Bet
Pep Guardiola has struggled to find the right formula for his side to be able to sustain pressure in the opposition half and limit the number of opportunities offered to the opposition to break with speed and directness – this lack of organisation has meant that City are too easy to cut through. With injuries to John Stones and Manuel Akanji, Guardiola will likely have to persist with Khusanov who has looked a little overwhelmed in his City appearances so far.
Khusanov has committed at least 1 foul in each of his 4 appearances for Man City. He’s an aggressive centre-back that has struggled a bit with the increased speed and intensity of Premier League football. This was particularly evident on his Premier League debut where he lost possession to gift Chelsea a goal and then committed a foul to bring down Cole Palmer moments later, receiving a yellow card to add to this difficult introduction.
He followed this up with 2 fouls in City’s 4-0 win over Newcastle in their most recent Premier League game. Pep Guardiola played him as a right-back in the Champions League defeat to Real Madrid midweek in which he also committed a foul and struggled to contain the threat of Madrid’s lethal frontline.

Over 2.5 Goals, Liverpool to Receive the Most Cards & Man City GK to Make 3+ Saves @ 5.50 on Paddy Power
Over 2.5 goals has landed in each of Man City’s last 5 games across all competitions, whilst Liverpool have seen over this line in 4 of their last 5 with the exception coming against Plymouth in the FA Cup, which was a game that saw heavy rotation for Liverpool. The initial game produced 2 goals but City carried very little attacking threat, they should be able to improve on that here. They’ve scored more goals at home than any other Premier League team (28).
Liverpool have been shown 52 cards across their 26 Premier League matches this season (2.0 per game). Liverpool have received 8 more cautions than City this season (44) and boast a superior foul rate too, indicating that the cautions should fly their way more frequently in this encounter. Liverpool are averaging 11.7 fouls committed per game in the Premier League this season (7th), whilst City are committing just 7.2 per game (20th).
This disparity in the foul averages doesn’t always translate to cards, but the referee could also prove important here, Anthony Taylor has handed out more cards to Liverpool (6) than any other side he’s officiated in the Premier League this season.
Ederson is expected to line up as City’s goalkeeper here, he’s having to make 2.31 saves per game in the Premier League this term, which is a metric we can expect to rise here when looking at how often Liverpool test the opposition goalkeeper. Arne Slot’s side have drawn 3+ saves from their opponents in 18 of their 26 Premier League matches this season (69% hit rate), underlining how much of an attacking threat the Reds can pose Pep Guardiola’s side here.
City’s goalkeeper has been forced into making 3+ saves in 6 of their last 10 Premier League games, it’ll be difficult for the Cityzens to contend with the depth of attacking quality at Liverpool’s disposal, a strength that has seen them average 6.5 shots on target per game in the Premier League this season – more than any other side in the division. Ortega was in the City net for the initial meeting between these sides at Anfield and was forced into making 5 saves.
👕 Man City v Liverpool Predicted XI

🔍 Man City v Liverpool Players to Watch
🔴 Mohamed Salah
Mohamed Salah has been unplayable for the majority of this season, he’s registered more goal contributions than any other player in the Premier League (39) which is a record that includes providing a goal or an assist in each of his last 7 appearances across all competitions.
Salah provided a goal and an assist in the initial meeting between these sides at Anfield and is also on penalties for Liverpool here. This is something that could prove to be a viable route to goal for the Egyptian given the fact that Liverpool have been awarded more penalties than any other side in the league this season (7).
🔵 Omar Marmoush
Marmoush properly introduced himself to the Premier League with a hat-trick against Newcastle in Man City’s most recent Premier League assignment. The winger has been a constant threat since arriving in Manchester, his speed in particular makes him suited to the rapid nature of the English top flight with the ability to get in behind the opposition when they play a high line.
Marmoush boasted an incredibly high shot volume during his time at Frankfurt, with the Egyptian averaging 4.77 shots and 2.23 shots on target per 90 across his 17 appearances in the Bundesliga. He can test Liverpool here with Manchester City averaging 6.1 shots on target per game in the Premier League this season.
🔴 Ryan Gravenberch
Ryan Gravenberch has been crucial in Liverpool’s midfield this season, he’s arguably been the best holding midfielder in the Premier League this campaign with his ability to operate in tight spaces informing his positive fouls won record.
Gravenberch is averaging 1.45 fouls won per 90 in the Premier League this season which is a record that includes being fouled at least once in 4 of his last 5 Premier League games. Gravenberch contested 10 duels in the initial meeting between these sides at Anfield, winning 1 foul in the process.

💻 Man City v Liverpool Form and Tactics
- Man City are bruised Champions at the moment, Pep Guardiola’s side crashed out of the Champions League in midweek, raising further questions about the consistency of this side and placing more importance on their domestic performances for the rest of the campaign with the possibility still looming large of missing out on the Champions League next season.
- They’ve been pretty strong at home despite a clear drop off in performances from recent campaigns, managing to win 8 of their 12 games at the Etihad Stadium this season, scoring 28 goals in the process which is the most any side have managed at home in the Premier League this term.
- Liverpool have the upper hand on the Cityzens when it comes to game management this season, with Arne Slot proving himself to be an excellent tactical operator in spotting issues and changing them quickly. This is most evident in the changes he makes at half-time to both personnel and instructions. As a result, the Reds have found the perfect balance between going at the opposition and slowing the tempo down to suit their game plan.
- City’s strength is clearly in attacking areas, so they’ll need to rely on their forward players being clinical here with a clean sheet unlikely considering the fact that Pep Guardiola’s men have managed to keep just 1 across their last 5 games in all competitions.
- Liverpool find themselves at a crucial point in the season, recent dropped points against Aston Villa and Everton have just left the door slightly ajar for title challengers Arsenal. However, away from this recent blip, Liverpool have comfortably been the best side in the Premier League this season. This was evident in Liverpool’s 2-0 win over Man City earlier in the season, which was a modest scoreline considering the volume of chances the Reds managed to generate.
- Alexis Mac Allister and Ryan Gravenberch are excellent operators in the middle of the park, Gravenberch, in particular is incredibly effective at evading the opposition press, allowing Liverpool to produce quick counterattacks. They are supported by two colossal centre-backs in Virgil Van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate who give Liverpool the confidence to push high up the pitch, knowing that the centre-back pairing can deal with any traffic coming their way.
