Leeds welcome Palace with Daniel Farke hoping to build on recent positive results at home against Chelsea and Liverpool.

Palace faced disappointment during the week as they failed to beat KuPS in the Conference League and missed out on the top eight as a result, meaning that Glasner’s side will have to battle through a playoff to reach the knockout stages.

📈 Leeds v Crystal Palace Form & Tactics

Leeds’ recent resurgence is all down to Farke tweaking his system to a 3-5-2 approach with two physical strikers leading the line. This system is in line with the general direction of travel in the Premier League at the moment which rewards physicality and a direct pattern of play.

Farke can’t rely on this shape fixing all of Leeds’ problems, as sides will start to work out the system and find ways to stifle Leeds’ physical approach - but it can be effective at Elland Road with the energy of the crowd behind them.

We saw this in Leeds’ recent results against Chelsea and Liverpool at home. They played with real intensity in both matches, and Chelsea in particular struggled with the aerial threat that Leeds posed through their forwards - but also from set pieces with Jaka Bijol netting the opening goal against the Blues from a corner.

I can’t see Oliver Glasner staying at Crystal Palace beyond this season, the manager market is already pretty poor and he will be in demand if he leaves Palace.

It felt like he was making a point to the ownership with his team selection during the week as he put out an academy side against KuPS, a game that Palace drew 2-2 - though he didn’t really have another option as Palace’s squad isn’t deep enough to compete every three days as they’re having to at the moment.

Palace do boast the best away record in the Premier League this season with five wins from their eight matches on the road - three more wins than they’ve managed at Selhurst Park this season. Palace have only conceded five goals across their eight away matches, the fewest of any Premier League side on their travels this season.

📔 Leeds v Crystal Palace Formation & Team News

Leeds’ 3-5-2 shape has given Daniel Farke a bit of a lifeline after reports that he would be dismissed from his role if results didn’t pick up quickly.

This shape effectively matches Palace in quite a few areas of the park, with the wide duels particularly standing out to me here. Palace have an extra body out wide, and like to force the opposition around their mid block which has been so effective on the road.

The area where Leeds could get a bit of joy here is in the middle of the park. Palace have looked a little fatigued in recent weeks, even with Glasner rotating the side, and Leeds’ energy at Elland Road could give them an advantage in the midfield battle.

Crystal Palace will line up in a 3-4-3 shape with Glasner reverting to his trusted squad for this clash after rotating for the Conference League game during the week.

Arsenal aside, Palace are the best defensive side in the Premier League and play with an effective mid block on the road which limits opportunities from central areas and forces the opposition out wide - where Palace usually have a 2v1 advantage in the duels.

Palace’s most important asset is definitely Oliver Glasner. He is squeezing the absolute maximum out of this side despite having a thin squad when compared to the other Premier League sides competing in Europe.

📊 Leeds v Crystal Palace Key Stats

  • Palace played on Thursday night against KuPS in the Premier League, Leeds have had a full week to prepare and rest.
