📂 Sunderland v Brighton Cheat Sheet
📈 Sunderland v Brighton Form & Stats
Sunderland have dropped off a little from the high standards they set in the early weeks of the season, but still have done enough to stay up in the Premier League which was always the main goal of the club. Their win over Leeds on the road last time out took them to the much discussed 40 point mark, which is seen as the bare minimum needed for a side to survive in the Premier League.
Sunderland have generally been a very tough side to beat at home this season, avoiding defeat in 12 of their 14 matches at the Stadium of Light. However, those two losses have come in their last two games in front of their own supporters with Sunderland losing to Fulham and Liverpool in recent home matches.
Brighton have underperformed this season and currently sit 14th in the league. They aren’t at risk of relegation, but the aim for Hurzeler and the club at the start of the campaign would have been to finish in a European spot, which now looks very unlikely unless the Seagulls can pull together a really strong run of form between now and the end of the campaign.
Brighton’s record on the road has mainly been what has let them down this season with Hurzeler’s side only managing to win three of their 14 games away from home this season. Only three sides have picked up fewer points on the road in the Premier League than Brighton this season, with the Seagulls conceding 20 goals across these matches.
📔 Sunderland v Brighton Formation & Team News
Sunderland have switched between two main shapes this season, a 4-2-3-1 and a 5-4-1. The latter shape is mainly reserved for when Sunderland are travelling to face the elite sides in the division, with Regis Le Bris well aware that his side don’t quite have the quality to go toe to toe with these sides.
One of Le Bris’ best traits is knowing when to be more conservative, and when to loosen the shackles on his players. He’ll know that Brighton are vulnerable on the road, so the most likely structure for Sunderland here is likely to be a 4-2-3-1 shape, knowing that they will be able to case Fabian Hurzeler’s side real issues with the space that Brighton leave at the back.
Brighton may also go with a 4-2-3-1, though Hurzeler has tweaked this at times to a 4-3-3. Brighton went with this shape in the initial league meeting between the sides, but struggled to break Sunderland down with 16 shots but no goals as the sides played out a 0-0 draw.
Brighton are set to welcome Yankuba Minteh back into the side which is a massive boost to their offensive options, though Karou Mitoma has gone back to the treatment table and isn’t expected back until after the international break.
