Brighton welcome Sunderland with Fabian Hurzeler’s side slipping down the table in recent weeks having been unable to register a win across their last three matches in the Premier League.

Sunderland claimed an emotive victory over Newcastle in the Tyne-Wear Derby last time out, marking their best start to a top flight campaign since the 2000/01 season.

📈 Brighton v Sunderland Form & Stats

I like a lot of Brighton’s players as individuals, but the Seagulls feel like a bit of a showcase side at times with Brighton long having an effective model of recruitment tha t works like a conveyor belt. This structure has been profitable, but has taken away elements of the overall identity of the squad which can make it difficult for Hurzeler to find cohesion and consistency.

However, Fabian Hurzeler has won 29 of his 64 matches with Brighton which works out to a win percentage of 45% which is a solid record for the youngest coach in the Premier League. He’s overtaken Roberto De Zerbi in terms of points won in the Premier League, further underlining his positive impact on a side that can look a little jaded at times with their recruitment policy and approach.

What this does give Hurzeler is a lot of options in the final third. Brighton have two players for every attacking position which makes them a little unpredictable and allows Hurzeler to be flexible with his tactical set up. The standout attacker at Brighton for me at the moment is Yankuba Minteh. I think he’s primed for a big move and has started to add end product to his game with five goal contributions this term.

Sunderland’s 1-0 win over Newcastle last time out reflected everything that has been positive about the Black Cats this season. I still give immense credit to Regis Le Bris, he set up the side to be pragmatic and found himself aided by a cowardly approach from Howe which saw Newcastle muster just six shots and an xG of 0.24.

Sunderland have now taken points off Arsenal, Chelsea, Aston Villa and Newcastle which shows that they aren’t just performing against the sides towards the bottom of the table. My favourite player in this Sunderland side is Noah Sadiki, I'm not sure how long the Black Cats will be able to hold onto him as he is a quality player and a necessary profile at some of the big clubs around Europe.

📔 Brighton v Sunderland Formation & Team News

Brighton tend to line up in a 4-2-3-1 on paper, but Hurzeler likes to build with a back three, or even two at times, when Brighton have possession. Mats Wieffer is given licence to invert into midfield, allowing Jack Hinselwood to be a spare man in the middle of the park and create overloads in those areas. It’ll be difficult for Brighton to do that effectively here as Sunderland offer the opposition very little space in the middle of the park.

Wide areas may be more fruitful for Brighton with Ferdi Kadioglu advancing up down the left hand side. He is sometimes joined by Maxim De Cuyper who has been playing as a winger in the absence of Karou Mitoma - though Hurzeler deployed Diego Gomez on the left against Liverpool last time out. Brighton are likely to use the wide areas more often than trying to force a pass through a congested area, with Minteh also offering a significant threat on the opposite flank.

Sunderland have been fantastic this season, but I’d question how long they can sustain their current levels. I say this as if you look at the expected points table, Sunderland sit 18th in the Premier League - with 10 more points than the xG and xG conceded models would expect them to have. Only Aston Villa (+15) and Wolves (-14) have a bigger difference in their expected points totals in the Premier League this season.

I think it’s fair to say that Sunderland are unlikely to be relegated from this position, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see the second half of their campaign be a bit more of a slog with the Black Cats already doing the majority of the heavy lifting to get them away from the scrap at the bottom of the league.
