Luton host Forest Green at Kenilworth Road on Friday night in the FA Cup. Both sides have enjoyed a golden period in their recent history, only to be followed by back-to-back relegations.

The visitors are now in their second season back at National League level and will be looking to spring an upset on Jack Wilshere’s League 1 Luton.

Over 0.5 Forest Green Goals

While it might be a different quality of opposition for Forest Green, they should come into this encounter with a good degree of confidence, given their position in the league and general form over the last three months.

While certainly not a universal theme across every single FA Cup encounter, teams from lower divisions can often improve their ability on the ball and surpass their usual levels of performance. There’s reason to believe the visitors will get some decent opportunities here.

Forest Green have failed to score in just three of their 20 matches in all competitions this season, that’s 85% of matches they’ve scored in. The visitors are notching up very healthy numbers on the road, scoring 17 goals in nine games, and failing to score just twice.

In Jack Wilshere’s first two league games in charge, Luton conceded 1.76xG against Mansfield and 1.00xG against Northampton, including six big chances. There are certainly some defensive frailties the visitors can exploit here.

Over 8.5 Corners

Luton's corner numbers at Kenilworth Road have been strong this season in the league, they’ve averaged 7.5 corners per game, while Kenilworth Road has produced an average of 11.0 corners across the season.

A new manager can bring fresh energy and impetus to a team, and Luton will be hoping for a honeymoon period under Jack Wilshere. It wouldn’t be a surprise to see Luton start this game quickly and put Forest Green under lots of early pressure. It’s often much easier to suffocate opposition and keep them pinned back on a smaller playing surface, like the one at Kenilworth Road.

Logically it feels far more likely we could see a higher corner count in the event of Forest Green scoring a goal, Luton might hypothetically be in a situation where they’re pushing for a winner or equaliser, and that’s why I like putting complimenting variables together.

📈 Luton v Forest Green Form & Stats

After being installed as bookies favourites to win the league this season, it’s been a mediocre start to life for Luton in League 1 after back-to-back relegations, they currently sit 10th after amassing 19 points from 13 games.

A long injury list to key players dating back to pre-season has plagued their early season endeavours, often relying on younger talent to fill the voids. A poor run of form which saw Luton pick up four points in five games resulted in Matt Bloomfield being given his marching orders, Jack Wilshere has now replaced him at the helm.

Wilshere has negotiated one defeat and two wins from his first two games in charge, the performance and result against Northampton was a step in the right direction.

Forest Green have stabilised at National League level after a rapid decline, which saw them face back-to-back relegations from League 1 to the National League. Last season saw the visitors finishing 3rd in the league, but they missed out on promotion through the play-offs. The signs are positive again this season, they currently sit 5th in the league, and just two points off league leaders, Rochdale.

Despite picking up a satisfying win at the weekend, it’s been a frustrating spell for Forest Green where they went winless in the three National League games prior to beating Boreham Wood. However, generally speaking, their form has been very positive, and they’ve lost only two games all season against 1st placed Rochdale and 3rd placed Carlisle.
