Man United and Aston Villa will meet in the Premier League on Boxing Day night. Both sides will come into this having dropped points in their last outings. Man United are the slight favourites in this one; however, it will definitely not be easy for the Red Devils when they welcome second-placed Villa to Old Trafford.
Things are going horribly wrong for Erik Ten Hag at Man United. The hosts have failed to score in any of their last four matches – which has not happened at the club since 1992. Forwards Antony, Alejandro Garnacho, Marcus Rashford, and Rasmus Hojlund are all struggling in front of goal. Ten Hag has been unfortunate in terms of injuries, with the poor availability of the likes of Lisandro Martinez and Casemiro.
Things could not be going much better for Unai Emery’s Villa, who find themselves amongst those at the top of the Premier League table. The hosts are unbeaten in their last ten games in all competitions. This run included notable wins against both Arsenal and Man City. Ollie Watkins has been in fine form, netting nine league goals already.
These Man United vs Aston Villa stats will provide an insight into what to expect from this Boxing Day fixture. If you are planning on placing a bet builder on this game, this is the place to look for some key tips.

⚽ Match stats: Villa to pile more pressure on Ten Hag
Man United beat Villa at Old Trafford in the last meeting between the two sides, but a lot has changed since then. Ten Hag’s side finished fourteen points above Villa last season; however now, Villa currently have an eleven point advantage over the hosts.
Villa have either won or drawn three of the last four games between the two sides in the league, winning 1-0 at Old Trafford in April 2021. The most notable result along this run involved Emery’s side winning 3-1 at Villa Park last season, with goals from Jacob Ramsey, Leon Bailey and Lucas Digne, who will all be available for the hosts on Boxing Day.
The Villans have had plenty of joy against the Premier League’s ‘big six’, winning against Arsenal, Man City, Spurs and Chelsea. The visitors did lose against Liverpool; however, they will be hopeful of making it five out of six when they face a struggling Man United side.
Unai Emery will be hopeful of picking up all three points from this encounter; however, with Man United possessing the home advantage, it makes perfect sense to back the visitors to either win or draw.
Predictions:
⚽ Aston Villa double chance @ 1.44
🎯 Shooting stats: McTominay and Watkins to hit the target
Man United’s attack has been very poor this season; however, Scott McTominay has stepped up at times for his boyhood club. The Scottish midfielder has averaged 2.3 shots per game in the league this season, with 1.1 shots finding the target. The bookies are offering a very generous price at 2.00. His ability to arrive late into the box has proven to be one of United’s only attacking outlets this season, with many believing a role as a second-striker could be one of Ten Hag’s ‘Hail Mary’s’ to keep him in the Old Trafford hotseat.
Ollie Watkins has performed very well for Villa this season. The Englishman has registered an average of 1.3 shots on target per ninety minutes, having around three attempts on goal per game. Watkins has hit the target in all of his last fourteen league games. United have been depleted defensivley too, with academy graduate Willy Kambwala thrust in for his Premier League debut in the 2-0 defeat to West Ham. Watkins will be purring at the chance to run this makeshift United back four ragged.
Both of our picks are their respective club’s top goal scorers, with Watkins scoring nine and McTominay scoring five so there is every chance of both finding target at least once on Tuesday night.
Predictions:
⚽ Scott McTominay to have 1+ shot on target @ 2.0
⚽ Ollie Watkins to have 1+ shot on target @ 1.36
🛑 Fouls stats: Feisty battles all over the pitch
The last meeting between the two sides was far from clean, with a total of twenty-three fouls. Sixteen of these were committed by Man United and seven were committed by Villa.
It was never planned for Jonny Evans to become a regular starter for Man United; however, the defender has featured ten times in the Premier League thus far. Evans has committed an average of 1.4 fouls per game. The thirty-five year old committed four fouls against West Ham on Saturday.
One player that struggled to keep his tackles clean in the last meeting was Douglas Luiz, with the Brazilian midfielder committing three fouls in this game. Luiz has committed an average of 1.5 fouls per game in the league and has fouled in his last ten league appearances for his club.
Expect a hectic game here, with both Evans and Luiz crossing the line at least once each.
Predictions:
⚽ Jonny Evans to commit 1+ foul @ 1.40
⚽ Douglas Luiz to commit 1+ foul @ 1.25
🟨 Card stats: Both sides to keep the referee busy
Man United have had the eight most yellow cards in the Premier League this season, averaging 2.33 yellow cards per game. Bruno Fernandes and Luke Shaw were booked plenty of times last season, and the pair have amassed a combined ten yellow cards already this campaign. Man United have collected two or more yellow cards in all of their last seven fixtures in all competitions.
Only three more teams have received more yellow cards than Emery’s Villa, who average 2.66 yellow cards per game. Villa have plenty of hard tacklers, including Boubacar Kamara, Douglas Luiz and Lucas Digne, all of whom have been booked five or more times so far this season. Two or more Villa players have been cautioned by the referee in their last nine outings.
Both teams have received two or more cards in three of the last four encounters between the pair. Expect the referee to be reaching for his pocket on numerous occasions.
Predictions:
⚽ Over 1.5 Man United cards @ 1.44
⚽ Over 1.5 Aston Villa cards @ 1.44
