Man United v Bodo/Glimt
⏰
Kick Off: Thursday 28th November at 20:00
🏆
Competition: UEFA Europa League
The Ruben Amorim era at Manchester United got off to an inauspicious start in Sunday’s lacklustre draw at Ipswich Town, however, a date with Norwegian outfit Bodø/Glimt could offer the Portuguese coach a chance to land a watershed win on his Old Trafford bow.
It’s already apparent that patience will be required as United’s players to adapt to the demands of Amorim’s 3-4-3 formation, however, time isn’t a luxury that the Red Devils have in the Europa League with the team languishing in 15th position in the expanded Group Stage ahead of matchday five.
⭐ Man United v Bodo/Glimt Best Bets
Man Utd were deployed in a 3-4-3 formation for the first time by Ruben Amorim on Sunday and they looked uncomfortable in their new defensive shape, conceding six shots on target and an xGA of 1.60 in their 1-1 draw at Ipswich.
Thursday’s meeting with Bodø/Glimt could be similarly awkward at times as United’s defenders continue to adjust to their new positions and the Norwegians could have opportunities to impact the scoresheet. Bodø/Glimt have already put FC Porto (3-2) and Braga (2-1) to the sword in the UEL Group Stage and they can trade blows with a nervous United.

🔍 Man United v Bodo/Glimt Players to Watch
🟡 Jens Petter Hauge
Jens Petter Hauge has been averaging 2.76 shots and 0.75 shots on target per 90 minutes in the Europa League this season and the 25-year-old was a particular menace in Bodo/Glimt’s 4-2 triumph over FC Porto on matchday one of the UEL group stage when he found his range with two of his four efforts, scoring twice.
Hauge, who also found the net at the weekend against Odd in the Norwegian Eliteserien, is a real threat cutting in from the left wing and the attacker could find room to manoeuvre against a United defence that will take time to build chemistry as a three-man unit. Back Hauge to lodge at least one accurate attempt at Old Trafford.
🟡 Philip Zinckernagel
Manchester United controlled 60% of the possession in their 1-1 draw at Ipswich on Sunday and with Ruben Amorim’s side likely to dictate play again on Thursday, several Bodø/Glimt players look like solid foul-market candidates, including versatile forward Philip Zinckernagel.
Zinckernagel is a workhorse when his team are chasing the ball and he has been averaging 1.38 tackles and 3.75 fouls per 90 minutes in the Europa League this term. The 29-year-old committed five, three and two fouls in his last three runouts in the competition and his overenthusiastic challenges could land him in trouble at least a couple of times again in Manchester.
🔴 Amad Diallo
Amad Diallo has been establishing himself as a regular first-team presence for United in recent weeks and the increasingly influential 22-year-old has lodged four goal contributions in his last three appearances in all competitions.
Diallo performed manfully in an unfamiliar wingback role against Ipswich on Sunday and was fouled twice during his raids down the right flank and that was the third United fixture in a row in which Amad drew at least one foul. Back the youngster’s quick feet to draw at least one mistimed challenge again on Thursday.

💻 Man United v Bodo/Glimt Form and Tactics
Despite scoring after just 81 seconds of Sunday’s test at Ipswich through Marcus Rashford, United failed to deliver a win in Ruben Amorim’s first game in charge, and in truth, their performance was generally insipid from minute two to 94 in Suffolk.
United’s football was pedestrian at Portman Road and the visitors struggled to play their way through an aggressive Ipswich press. Despite controlling two-thirds of the possession, United managed to clock just 11 attempts, while 0.25 of their total 0.80 in xGF was accounted for by Rashford’s opener.
Defenders Noussair Mazraoui and Matthijs de Ligt had 127 and 86 touches each against Ipswich, highlighting United’s inability to move the ball forward, while keeper Andre Onana (57 touches) saw more of the ball than two of the Red Devils’ front three outfielders.
United did look a little better after the second-half introduction of Luke Shaw and Manuel Ugarte, though it’s already clear that it will take a considerable amount of time and tweaking for the team to find its flow in Ruben Amorim’s 3-4-3 system.
Bodø/Glimt’s short-passing style (210.3 p/90) under Kjetil Knutsen has been earning them a decent amount of success in the Europa League so far and the Norwegians currently sit three places (12th) ahead of United (15th) in the table having collected seven points to the Red Devils’ six.
Bodø/Glimt managed to extract seven points from their first three matches in the group against FC Porto, Union SG and Braga despite losing the xGF battle on each occasion, however, somewhat ironically, they came out on top in the expected goals stakes when losing to Qarabag on matchday four.
In fact, only five clubs have a worse xGA figure in the competition so far than Bodø/Glimt (7.30), and while only two teams have been conceding more shots on target per 90 (7.00), nobody has been conceding more shots in general than the Superlaget (19.75 p/90).
Bodø/Glimt keeper Nikita Haikin has saved more shots on target than any other keeper in the competition, parrying away 23 (82.1%) of the 28 accurate efforts he’s faced in the Europa League so far, so United will need to be at their sharpest to beat the Russian.
