🔵 A Rough Start for Roberto De Zerbi
After guiding Marseille to a 2nd-place finish in Ligue 1 behind PSG last season, Roberto De Zerbi has not had an ideal start to the new campaign, losing two of his three games. The defeats have come in poor circumstances too - in their season-opener against Rennes, the hosts received a red card after 31 minutes, but Marseille were unable to take advantage. Rennes even managed to register five shots on target, considerably more than Marseille’s two, despite being a man short.
Marseille did follow up with a victory, though Les Phoceens again showed vulnerability at the back, conceding twice against newly-promoted Paris FC. Just before the international break, Marseille were beaten 1-0 at the Groupama Stadium by Lyon after Conrad Egan-Riley was sent off in the first half. Once again, Marseille conceded late on to deny them any points, but Lyon were totally dominant, racking up 18 shots worth 3.04 xG.
🔴 An Inconsistent Return to the Top-Flight
Lorient’s results this season have been all over the place. Their return to the top-flight began in defeat, as Les Merlus showcased struggles on the road once again - they were beaten 1-0 by Auxerre in a closely-contested game.
Lorient looked much more assured in their next game at the Stade du Moustoir, beating Rennes 4-0. The visitors had received two red cards after 11 minutes for separate incidents, so had to play with nine men for the majority of the game. Lorient were able to press home their advantage and dominate proceedings.
But they were then on the receiving end of a battering just before the international break, losing 7-1 on home turf against Lille. All eight goals came in the second half, as the visitors scored seven from 3.49 xG. Based on those results, it’s difficult to predict what Lorient will come out with after the international break.
📊 Marseille v Lorient H2H
Marseille have been dominant in this head-to-head matchup over the years, winning nine of the last ten meetings, with the one failure being a draw. In those 10 games, Marseille have scored a total of 27 goals, conceding just eight in return.
