PSG v Marseille

📅
Kick Off: Sunday 16th March at 19:45
🏆
Competition: Ligue 1
📺
What TV Channel: Amazon Prime

Marseille will travel to the Parc Des Princes to take on a PSG side fresh from their impressive triumph at Anfield on penalties to steer them into the quarter-finals of the Champions League. PSG have the luxury of not being too concerned about the Ligue 1 title race, with Luis Enrique’s side boasting a 16-point gap at the top of the table.

Even if Marseille are able to win here it will take a mammoth effort to find the points to catch PSG, as well as relying on the defending champions dropping points which doesn’t seem likely given their current form.

➡️ 2+ Cards in the First Half @ 1.91 with Paddy Power

The derby element of this game cannot be ignored, even though there isn’t much on the line, these sides are fierce rivals and often participate in feisty games, which aids our selection here in looking for first half cautions.

This selection landed inside just 20 minutes in the initial meeting between these sides earlier in the season, Hojbjerg was cautioned after 18 minutes, which was quickly followed by a red card for Amine Harit. The red card ruined the flow of the game, so we can’t take much notice of the low foul numbers in the game with PSG cruising after establishing a 3-0 lead in the first half.

This selection also landed in the previous meeting between the sides last season, it was PSG’s turn to catch the eye of the referee in collecting five yellow cards in the first half which included a red card for Lucas Beraldo. These recent meetings suggest that fixtures between these rivals are often aggressive from the very beginning.

PSG to Score First in Each Half & Marseille to Receive the First Card in Each Half

PSG’s goal rate at home is really impressive, they’ve scored 35 goals across their 12 games at home in Ligue 1 this season (2.91 per game). Unsurprisingly, no side has scored more goals at home in the French top-flight than PSG with Luis Enqriue’s side scoring 2+ goals in each of their last five games. PSG comfortably swept aside Marseille in the initial meeting between the sides, establishing a 3-0 lead before the break. Marseille have been shown 11 more cautions than PSG in Ligue 1 this season. They were shown two cards in the first half of the most recent encounter between the sides and are likely to be catching the eye of the referee more often than their opponents here, as the away side.

🔍 PSG v Marseille Players to Watch

🔵 Bradley Barcola

PSG are arguably the best attacking side in Europe this season, the combination of Kvaratskhelia, Barcola and Dembele are a threat to any side in world football and they can combine again here to cause Marseille plenty of problems. Barcola has registered 20 goal contributions across his 25 appearances in Ligue 1 this season (13 goals, seven assists).

While Ousmane Dembele has taken the majority of the headlines for his scintillating form in the Champions League this season, Barcola has been on an incredible run of form domestically. He’s recorded a goal contribution in each of his last four games across all competitions, as well as finding the back of the net against Marseille earlier in the season.

⚪ Leonardo Balerdi

Balerdi features as part of a back three for Marseille, often playing as the central centre back which pits him directly up against arguably the most inform player in Europe at the moment in Ousmane Dembele. Dembele is averaging 0.84 fouls won per 90 across his 23 appearances in Ligue 1 this season.

Balerdi is averaging 1.10 fouls committed per 90 across his 21 appearances in Ligue 1 this season, which is a record that has produced six yellow cards and one red card for the 26-year-old - more than any other player in the Marseille squad. Balerdi has been shown three yellow cards across his last five appearances in Ligue 1.

💻 PSG v Marseille Form & Tactics

PSG have been unstoppable since the turn of the year, losing just one of their last 20 games across all competitions. That was the first leg of their Champions League tie with Liverpool, a game they didn’t deserve to lose when looking at their underlying numbers.

They’ve been totally dominant in Ligue 1 as expected this campaign, with a 16-point lead at the top of the table. This run of form has included some sensational victories over Man City, Lyon and Lille, as well as firing 10 goals past Brest over two legs in Europe. PSG will line up in a 4-3-3 shape, and we can expect some rotation from Luis Enrique, given that the Parisians played all 120 minutes and had to endure a penalty shootout against Liverpool in midweek.

They have always had the quality to test opposition sides, but the egocentric nature of those previous sides barred PSG from the top prizes in European football. Luis Enrique has assembled a side just as stacked with quality that is aggressive off the ball, particularly with their counter-press, which Liverpool found tough to manage.

Marseille haven’t had a bad campaign, but competing against a side like PSG was always going to be difficult. Their rivals have a complete monopoly over the French league, which is evident by their 16-point lead at the top of the table. Roberto De Zerbi is having to cope with a host of injuries at the moment, which has led to the former Brighton boss tweaking his tactical approach slightly. Marseille are expected to line up in a 3-4-3 shape, but don’t be surprised to see this become a five against the attacking force of PSG.

Marseille aren’t in awful form, but the two losses they’ve suffered in the last five games just can’t compete with the efficiency of this PSG side. They have been pretty steady away from home in Ligue 1 this season, winning nine of their 12 games on the road - a record only bettered by PSG in Ligue 1 this season.
