Sunday’s MLS Accumulator Tips
On Decision Day in the MLS, a top-against-bottom clash in the Eastern Conference wouldn’t usually appeal as often not much would be riding on it but that isn’t the case when Inter Miami host New England Revolution on Saturday.
Miami have already won the Supporters’ Shield and know that they have home-field advantage throughout the playoffs but there is one thing left for them to achieve before the postseason.
That comes in the regular season points record which they need a win to claim. In a quirky twist of fate they would be taking it from their opponents here who set the mark three years ago when they accumulated 73 points. A Miami win here would see them finish with 74.
They look to have the ideal opponents to feed on too because the Revolution head to Florida off the back of a 4-0 thumping at the hands of a Columbus Crew side who missed their best player last weekend.
Speaking of best players, there is no Carles Gil for the Revs in this one while a certain Lionel Messi goes into the game off the back of five goal involvements in a win for Argentina in midweek. Miami can get the Decision Day acca rolling with a comfortable win.
It is a big night for DC United as they bid to secure their spot in the postseason when they welcome Charlotte FC to Audi Field. Charlotte know they will be on the road in the playoffs next weekend but DC need a point to ensure they are in.
While a point would get the men from the capital into the postseason, they will have to go through the wildcard game and a win here would ensure they host that match barring something of a miraculous turn of events elsewhere, and as we know in MLS home advantage can be crucial.
That should ensure that a DC side who are 6-2-2 in their last 10 matches should be fired up and going all out for the win here, potentially against a Charlotte side who might choose to rest some players ahead of next week.
Charlotte are only 4-4-8 for the season on the road and with little to play for DC have to be taken here but take the draw out given that we could get to a scenario where they settle for a point to extend their year.
Rivalry games on Decision Day are always good fun especially when both teams involved have something to play for which is the case for Orlando City and Atlanta United when they face off on Saturday night.
Orlando will be in the playoffs but need to win here to ensure being at home in the two out of three first rounds of the postseason while Atlanta have to win and hope that results go their way elsewhere if they are to extend their campaign.
The latter is very unlikely it has to be said. Atlanta need to win and hope two of DC United, CF Montreal and Philadelphia Union don’t. They can only do their end of things but with just one win in six and only 3-6-7 on the road, the Five Stripes look to have left it too late.
Few teams are finishing the season as well as Orlando are with them winning six of their last seven and it would be a surprise if they don’t win here.
When we move to the closing games in the Western Conference all eyes will be on the race for the number one seed, a battle which Los Angeles FC are very much a part of after their late winner in Vancouver last weekend.
LAFC now know that a win at home to the worst team in MLS in the San Jose Earthquakes, coupled with a defeat for LA Galaxy at Houston, would see the black and gold as top dogs in the West heading into the playoffs.
LAFC could not have asked for a friendlier finish to the season. San Jose have picked up just 21 points from a possible 99 this term, have conceded 75 goals in 33 games and are just 2-2-12 on their travels. LAFC are 10-4-2 at home, have Denis Bouanga back from international duty for this match, have won their last four and are flying.
San Jose have been to BMO Stadium twice this season. In the MLS they lost 6-2 and in the Leagues Cup, they were trounced 4-1. It would be a surprise if there weren’t two goals between them here.
Minnesota United know that they are in the playoffs but they haven’t yet guaranteed not needing the wildcard match, something they will be looking to do when they play host to St Louis City SC on Decision Day.
A draw should see them bypass the midweek action while a win definitely will. The latter could even see them rise to fifth in the table and offer up the chance to miss both Los Angeles sides and a surging Seattle in the opening round of the playoffs.
Talking of surges, few are on one quite like Minnesota United at the minute. The Loons had a rough spell in the middle of the season but are 5-1-1 for their last seven matches and have hit form at the right time with their attacking players coming back to the party.
St Louis are playing the role of spoiler on the final day of the season and head to Minnesota with three wins from their last four but that is only masking a shocking road campaign of one win all season, which was at a terrible San Jose. Minnesota should have all the tools they need to bypass the wildcard game here.
The quirky Decision Day fixture list has thrown up not just a big fixture in the MLS but a decider for the Cascadia Cup as rivals Seattle Sounders host the Portland Timbers with plenty on the line for both sides.
Seattle will go in search of a first Cascadia Cup since 2021 and need a win to secure that, while three points would also see them finish third in the Western Conference.
Portland know that they will be in the wildcard match in midweek but a win here and Vancouver to lose at Real Salt Lake would mean that the Timbers host that game. Victory would also give them the Cascadia Cup so there is no shortage of things at stake here.
Seattle have to be the favourites though. Not only are they home on their unique turf but they are flying right now with five wins and a draw from their last six.
Portland have hit the buffers recently. They are without a win in four and haven’t scored in their last two. Seattle have to be the call here.
