Monaco Double Chance

Monaco started the season in convincing fashion, easing past Le Havre by a 3-1 scoreline. The hosts were completely dominant, accounting for 74% possession to restrict the visitors to just 0.6 xG from nine attempts.

Lille were less impressive in gameweek 1, as they played out a 3-3 draw on the road against Brest. Les Dogues might have ranked as the 2nd-best defensive unit in Ligue 1 last season, but with several key departures, they seem set to struggle at the back this term. Brest amassed 2.01 xG from 18 shots against them and were unfortunate to only come away with one point.

Maghnes Akliouche to have 1+ Shots on Target

Maghnes Akliouche was on target against Le Havre last time out, as he scored the third Monaco goal to ensure his side would start the season with three points. Having played the full 90 on the right wing, the Frenchman managed two shots in total, with the other striking the post.

The 23-year-old was a standout performer in the previous campaign, featuring in 43 matches in all competitions registering seven goals and 12 assists. He maintained that excellent form into the current season, netting five goals across seven pre-season appearances, including a hat-trick against Coventry, and one goal in the final pre-season game against Inter Milan.

  • Only three Lille players who started the final game of last season were in the XI against Brest.

  • Akliouche racked up the most shots in the Monaco squad last season, with 61. Eliesse Ben Seghir was 2nd with 58.

  • The Frenchman had an average of 2.28 shots per 90 in the league, with 28% hitting the target.

🔴 A Complete Overhaul in Northern France

Lille have undergone a major overhaul this summer, with several key departures reshaping the squad. Their defensive unit, statistically the strongest in Ligue 1 last season behind only PSG, has been dismantled. Goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier has made the move to Paris, while Bafode Diakite and Gabriel Gudmundsson have completed transfers to Premier League clubs Bournemouth and Leeds, respectively. Samuel Umtiti was released after his contract expired, while Mitchel Bakker returned to Atalanta following his loan.

The changes were not limited to defence - Jonathan David, who scored 16 league goals last season, has left on a free transfer alongside Angel Gomes, stripping Lille of attacking quality. 38-year-old Olivier Giroud has been brought in to shoulder the goalscoring burden. Even in the dugout, there is change, with Paulo Fonseca departing and Bruno Genesio taking charge. With so much transition, this season feels like a fresh start, and Lille’s adaptability will be seriously tested.

🔵 Hutter’s Men to Maintain Consistency

Contrastingly, Monaco have kept the core of their squad intact over the summer while adding a couple of high-profile reinforcements to further strengthen their push for success. Eric Dier joined on a free transfer from Bayern Munich, and he got on the scoresheet on his debut. Perhaps the most intriguing addition though is Paul Pogba, who will be eager to reignite his career and push for a recall to the French national team after two years away from professional football.

Stability has been key for Monaco under Adolf Hutter, who guided his side to a 3rd-place finish last season to secure Champions League qualification for the second season running. Monaco have steadily improved under Hutter since he took charge in July 2023, and they look at their strongest in terms of squad depth this term. Having kicked off the new campaign with an impressive 3-1 victory, Les Monegasques will be full of confidence as they look to build momentum.

📊 Lille v Monaco H2H

Head-to-head encounters between these two have been evenly-matched over the years, with Lille having the slight upper hand. In Ligue 1, Lille have won four of the last 10 tussles, while Monaco have taken two victories. Four games have ended in a draw, three of which were goalless stalemates.
