Both Teams To Score @ 1.67

I’m more than happy to back both teams to get on the scoresheet at Fir Park on Saturday evening. Rangers struggled to keep clean sheets away from home in last season’s Scottish Premiership, with both teams netting in 13 of their 19 league games away from Ibrox. While the Light Blues are now under new management, they did look a bit shaky defensively across the two legs of their Champions League qualifier with Panathinaikos. What’s more, Wednesday night’s second leg in Athens will have taken a lot out of Russell Martin’s men, so the quick turnaround is far from ideal.

As for Motherwell, they are coming into the new season as a bit of an unknown quantity under new manager Jens Berthel Askou. That being said, the Steelmen did win their Scottish League Cup group with relative ease, picking up 11 points from a possible 12. However, it is worth noting that Motherwell failed to keep a clean sheet in their group games with both Clyde and Peterhead, which doesn't bode well ahead of a visit from Rangers.

Over 2.5 Goals @ 1.46

With an entertaining encounter anticipated at Fir Park on Saturday evening, Over 2.5 Goals also holds plenty of appeal. When he was appointed as Motherwell boss in June, new manager Askou stated that his team will be attractive to watch this season, while it is well known that latest Rangers boss Russell Martin's style of play is not risk averse. Thus, the ingredients are certainly in place for a goal-heavy game in North Lanarkshire this weekend.

That was certainly the case when the two teams went head-to-head last season, with Over 2.5 Goals clicking  in each of the four meetings between the pair, one of which was a 2-2 draw in the one and only meeting at this venue. It’s also worth pointing out that three of Motherwell’s four Scottish League Cup Group G games produced a minimum of three match goals,  including each of their two outings in front of their own supporters.

Over 9.5 Corners @ 1.53

A minimum of 10 match corners looks well within range at Fir Park on Saturday evening. Rangers have long had a reputation as a team that rack up a high volume of corners on the domestic front, with the Glasgow giants averaging a sizeable 6.77 flag kicks per game last season. That can be attributed to the fact that Rangers’ league games last season were generating an average of 11.11 corners per 90.

Now, under the guidance of attack-minded manager Russell Martin, I fully expect Rangers’ matches to continue to deliver high corner counts this season. That was the case in midweek, with both teams combining to produce 14 corners in the Light Blues’ Champions League qualifier with Panathinaikos.

One notable takeaway from Motherwell’s Scottish League Cup group stage campaign was the number of corners they earned in their games against Stenhousemuir and Morton, hitting 14 and eight flag kicks across those two respective ties. On top of all that, the Steelmen’s Scottish Premiership matches last season yielded an average of 11.19 corners per game.

📈 Motherwell v Rangers Form & Tactics

As mentioned, Motherwell have already enjoyed four competitive run-outs ahead of their Scottish Premiership opener with Rangers this weekend. After playing out a shock 2-2 draw away at Clyde on matchday one of the Scottish League Cup, the Steelmen recovered to win their following three matches to book a spot in the last 16. Motherwell’s standout performance was a 3-0 win over Greenock Morton last midweek, which saw them rubber-stamp top spot in Group G.

While we saw some fairly heavy squad rotation from new Well boss Askou during the group phase of the League Cup, it would appear that his preferred formation is a 4-3-3 with one sitting midfielder.

Motherwell’s Tawanda Maswanhise produced a string of impressive performances during the group stage of the Scottish League Cup, bagging a brace against both Clyde and Morton. It’s also worth pointing out that the Zimbabwe international scored against Rangers at Fir Park last season.

Rangers will head into the new Scottish Premiership season in high spirits after successfully getting past Panathinaikos in a Champions League second round qualifier on Wednesday night, courtesy of a 3-1 aggregate victory. While new manager Russell Martin is very clear about the style of football he wants to implement, there were teething issues with Rangers’ build-up play in each of their two games against Panathinaikos, not to mention they lost the xG battle both home and away. That being said, the new Gers boss is still in the process of reshaping his squad, with square pegs in round holes the order of the day against the Greeks.

In terms of the new players that Martin has brought in, Djeidi Gassama has looked like the pick of the bunch so far. The 21-year-old winger came off the bench to score crucial goals in both legs of Rangers’ Champions League qualifier with Panathinaikos.
