Netherlands v England
📅
Kick Off: Wednesday 10th July at 20:00
📺
Watch Live: BBC One
🏆
Competition: Euro 2024
England managed to work their way through another round without hitting the peak performance levels to make it into a third semi-final in the last four major tournaments.
They managed only one shot on target in the 90 minutes against Switzerland, but thankfully for the Three Lions, that shot went into the Swiss net via the post. Bukayo Saka was the provider of the goal, and he has been a livewire for Gareth Southgate’s team all tournament.
The change of shape that Southgate implemented, a 3-4-3 from a 4-2-3-1, did seem to have some benefits. Phil Foden and Jude Bellingham were able to operate centrally and England again generally looked quite solid defensively. The inverted wing backs also worked as Saka was able to beat his man repeatedly on the outside.
The Netherlands are the only semi-finalists yet to experience extra time at this tournament. They did exceptionally well to come back from a goal down to Turkey in the last round. Cody Gakpo is now the outright top goalscorer in the competition and England will need a plan to deal with the Liverpool forward, as well as attacking right back Denzel Dumfries.
The history between these two nations goes way back, as we will delve into below, but never have they met as late as this in a tournament. Neither team are prolific tournament winners either, both have won majors only once, the 1988 Euros for the Netherlands and the 1966 World Cup for England, so this is a huge opportunity for both nations.

Netherlands v England Best Bets
➡️ 1-1 correct score @ 5.50 with Paddy Power
➡️ Kobbie Mainoo to have 1+ shots @ 1.73 with Paddy Power
➡️ Nathan Ake to commit 1+ fouls @ 1.67 with Paddy Power
➡️ Tijjani Reijnders to be fouled 1+ times @ 1.83 with Paddy Power
It is always difficult to call a semi-final. Indeed, the draw is always a live runner in these matches as has been seen by ten of the last 14 Euro semi-finals needing at least extra time to separate the teams.
Bearing this in mind, as well as England’s form, it may be worth looking at the low-scoring draws in the correct score market. A low-scoring draw is probably the preferred bet, 1-1 is priced at 5.5 but for those who see a bit more tension taking over and a lack of chances being created, 0-0 is available at 6.5.
However, there are actually a number of player-based singles that stand out as really good bets.
The first is to back a Kobbie Mainoo shot as a single, this is priced at 1.73. The Manchester United man will probably not play the whole 90 minutes but that has not stopped him getting shots off in this tournament – while Paddy Power Super Sub is active with this selection anyway. He has started the last two matches and fired off two shots in each of them. That makes it four starts and six shots for Mainoo for England.
The next suggestion is for Nathan Ake to make a foul at 1.67. Ake made two fouls against Turkey in the last round, but most importantly he is likely to be up against Bukayo Saka if Southgate keeps the same shape from the last round. Saka has been fouled twice per match in the last four matches at Euro 2024, so the price looks a little bit too big for a single foul.
The final suggestion as a best bet is for Tijjani Reijnders to be fouled at 1.83. Reijnders has been fouled in each of his last four matches, which means that he looks to be overpriced in this market. With England looking a bit smarter in the press, and the importance of Reijnders in the Netherlands’ build-up, it makes sense for Declan Rice and Kobbie Mainoo to push up on the AC Milan midfielder.

📊 Netherlands Form and Stats
The 2-1 victory over Turkey gave Netherlands consecutive knockout wins after their 3-0 triumph over Romania in the round of 16.
This makes Netherlands the only team not to require an extra 30 minutes to progress, this could be a key benefit to them moving forward in the tournament, especially against teams like England who have looked a little tired.
Netherlands’ overall record in the tournament stands at three wins, one draw and one defeat. They lost to Austria in an exciting final group game, but drew with France in the group as well as defeating Poland.
Goals have been more of a feature in the Netherlands’ matches as well with their last three all going over 2.5 goals, making it nine of their last ten going over 2.5 goals.
📊 England Form and Stats
England continued their unconvincing ways against Switzerland, albeit there is a general feeling that the change of shape did improve things between the boxes. However, England again failed to generate over 1 xG, for the fourth time in five matches in this tournament.
It seems quite clear that Gareth Southgate is content enough to not generate a lot of chances, as long as they aren’t conceding many either. Against Switzerland they conceded few chances, indeed only Breel Embolo’s goal was classed as a big chance in the whole match.
England’s performance in the penalty shoot-out will have done wonders for their confidence when it comes to spot kicks, and the danger could be an over-reliance on that confidence if the match is beginning to look like a draw.
The draw after 90 minutes in the last match means that England have won only once in the tournament, drawing the other four, and it is now only two wins in ten over 90 minutes for the Three Lions. Eight of the ten matches have also gone under 2.5 goals, including all five Euro 2024 matches.
⚔️ Netherlands v England Head-to-Head
This is the 23rd meeting between the two nations’ international teams. The first match was back in 1935 and it took until 1977 for the Netherlands to get their first win over England. The overall record is in favour of Netherlands though with seven wins to England’s six. However, it is interesting to note that there have been nine draws as well, perhaps more of a nod to how often these teams have played friendlies against each than anything meaningful though.
The last competitive match between the two was in the Nations League finals in 2019, where the Netherlands won 3-1. Only three of that Netherlands team are likely to play in this match, and four from England.
There were eight friendlies before that and England didn’t win a single one of them despite four of them being played at home.
This means that the last England win against Netherlands was also their last major tournament meeting, the famous England 4-1 Netherlands group stage match in Euro 1996 in which Alan Shearer and Teddy Sheringham scored two goals each to send England into the quarter-finals.
