Newcastle v Fulham
📅
Kick Off: Saturday 1st February at 15:00
🏆
Competition: Premier League
Champions League-chasing Newcastle welcome a stubborn Fulham side to St James Park. Eddie Howe’s side have really picked up after a slow start to the season, they’ve won 10 of their last 11 games across all competitions which has included victories over Arsenal, Tottenham, Aston Villa and Man United.
Fulham are the quintessential Premier League side, they are incredibly tough to beat and have the ability to give any side in the division a game on their day. Their season has been marred by inconsistency which is reflected in their recent form, with just 1 win in their last 5 Premier League outings.
⭐ Newcastle v Fulham Best Bet
St James’ Park has become a tougher ground to visit as the season has gone on, Newcastle’s surprise defeat to Bournemouth recently was their first defeat on home turf since November. Eddie Howe’s side have won 10 of their last 11 and look a fair price to emerge victorious here.
Fulham started the season in great form, keeping pace with the top 6, but have struggled to maintain this form. What’s particularly telling is how often they fail to kill off games, they’ve only managed to win 3 of their last 11 games in the Premier League, with 6 of these games ending in draws, including cheap dropped points against Southampton and Ipswich.
The initial meeting between these sides ended in a 3-1 win for Fulham, but the context for both teams was very different. Newcastle struggled to find attacking fluidity in the early parts of the season, something they’ve managed to fix – as evidenced by the fact they’ve breached the opposition defence at least once in their last 14 Premier League matches. Fulham will be competitive in this game but could struggle with the attacking talent present in this Newcastle side.
🟢 Newcastle v Fulham #WhatOddsPaddy Tip
Alexander Isak is far and away Newcastle’s top goalscorer in the Premier League this season, he’s scored 17 goals across his 21 Premier League appearances including a brace against Southampton last time out. Newcastle’s next top scorer is Anthony Gordon with just 6, showing how important Isak is to the Magpies. He’s on penalties for Newcastle and is clearly their biggest goal threat, making this option for him to score first for Newcastle a solid one.
Jimenez leads the way in the Fulham goalscoring ranks, albeit not by the same margin that Isak does. He’s scored 8 goals across his 23 appearances this season and can be clinical in front of goal. He’s matching his xG of 8.24 this campaign which suggests that when decent chances come his way, he usually can find the back of the net. Jimenez scored Fulham’s opener after just 5 minutes in the initial meeting between these sides at St James’ Park.
👕 Newcastle v Fulham Predicted XI
🔍 Newcastle v Fulham Players to Watch
⚫ Alexander Isak
Alexander Isak has scored 17 goals across his 21 Premier League appearances this season, he scored a brace in Newcastle’s 3-1 win over Southampton last time out and has scored in 7 of his last 8 games, with the exception coming in Newcastle’s uncharacteristic defeat against Bournemouth.
Isak is getting plenty of service in this Newcastle side at the moment, he’s also on penalties for his side offering another avenue to goal for the Swedish international.
⚫ Anthony Gordon
Gordon has had 18 shots on target across his 22 Premier League appearances this season (0.91 per 90). He had a shot on target in Newcastle’s last Premier League game at St James’ Park against Bournemouth and is part of a Newcastle side that is averaging 4.8 shots on target per game in the Premier League this campaign.
Gordon fired a shot on target in the initial meeting between the sides at Craven Cottage and can repeat the feat here, Newcastle managed 5 shots on target in that game but come into this game as a much more potent attacking force, who can hurt Fulham.
⚪ Alex Iwobi
Iwobi has improved his output a lot this season, he’s always been a technically sound player but often didn’t post the numbers to match. He’s provided 10 goal contributions across his 23 Premier League appearances this season, pretty much being an ever-present in Marco Silva’s side.
He’s averaging 2.08 shots per 90 across the season as a whole and has managed 2+ shots in each of his last 5 games in the Premier League, including against Man United in Fulham’s most recent Premier League assignment.

💻 Newcastle v Fulham Form and Tactics
Eddie Howe’s side line up in a 4-3-3 shape with the midfield trio of Tonali, Guimaraes and Joelinton amongst the best midfields in the Premier League. It is this combination in the middle of the park that allows Newcastle to dominate games, opposition sides often can’t compete with the physicality and technical ability of the trio which make them perfectly suited to Premier League football.
It’s also worth noting that Newcastle utilise their fullbacks well in the final third, Hall and Livramento offer width and allow Newcastle to create overloads in wide areas, with both having the required recovery pace to recover if Newcastle lose the ball in transition.
Fulham are amongst the most organised sides in the Premier League, Marco Silva gives very specific instructions to his players and there isn’t much room for creativity. The wide players are given defensive responsibilities and they may have added instructions here with how deadly Newcastle can be in these wide areas. Expect Marco Silva to pack the midfield with his more physical assets with a real battle expected at St James’ Park between the men in the middle.
Fulham’s left side is usually the side they choose to build up from, with Antonee Robinson’s speed creating problems for the opposition. If Livramento isn’t disciplined enough when tracking back, this could offer a route out for Fulham when they are under pressure. Alex Iwobi also operates down this side of the pitch and has been one of the standout players for Fulham this season making it a real strength of the West London side.
