Tottenham return to the scene of their biggest Premier League defeat under Ange Postecoglou when they travel to the north east to lock horns with Newcastle at St. James’ Park on Sunday.
Spurs were dismantled 4-0 when they last visited Tyneside in April, though the Londoners look better equipped to provide stiffer opposition for the Magpies this weekend.
Newcastle and Tottenham sit in fifth and sixth place respectively ahead of their latest encounter having collected four points from two games each, and while United have been installed as slight favourites to triumph on Sunday, there is little to choose between the sides in terms of price.
Newcastle v Tottenham Best Bets
With Ange Postecoglou’s determination to cram as many attacking players into his line-up and Tottenham’s high defensive line offering acres of space for a rapid Newcastle frontline to expose, goals should be the order of the day when these teams collide on Sunday.
The last seven meetings between United and Spurs in the league averaged a mammoth 4.85 goals per game and all the ingredients for another goal bonanza are there again this weekend.
The value has been squeezed out of over 2.5 goals (1.30), though backing Newcastle to net over 1.5 team goals at 1.67 could be the smarter play at a much better price.Newcastle put four and six goals past Tottenham in the Londoners’ last two visits to St. James’ Park and the Magpies have the right personnel to break Spurs’ watery offside trap again.
The same logic can be applied to Alexander Isak’s chances in the anytime goalscorer market at a superb price of 2.20.
The Swedish striker’s acceleration should pose real problems for Tottenham, just like it did when he scored twice in last season’s corresponding fixture in April. Isak also scored two of Newcastle’s goals in the Magpies’ 6-1 mauling of Spurs in April 2023, so back him to do some more damage on Sunday.

📊 Newcastle Form and Stats
Newcastle showed plenty of mettle to dig out a 1-0 win over Southampton on matchday one despite playing over an hour of that contest with ten men following the dismissal of Fabian Schar.
The Magpies showed superb defensive discipline and restricted the Saints to an xGF of just 1.80 on the campaign’s opening weekend despite posting a possession figure of only 23%.
Eddie Howe’s charges found the going just as tough at his old club Bournemouth last weekend and were perhaps a little fortunate to leave the south coast with a point having lost the xGF battle by a considerable wedge (2.20 to 1.60).
United’s lax showing at the Vitality Stadium was a throwback to last season when they regularly struggled with travel sickness. Indeed, 11 of the 14 Premier League defeats they suffered last term came on the road.
Newcastle have been conceding more shots per 90 minutes (17.50) than any other team in the division so far and while those fixtures are skewed a little by their first game with a man less against Southampton, they are still a cause for concern.
The Magpies are in the market for a centre-half, namely Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi, though they have been frustrated in their pursuit so far with the Eagles demanding £70m for their England international.
With Sven Botman and Jamaal Lascelles injured and Fabian Schar ruled out through suspension, the defensive pairing that looked so vulnerable against Bournemouth (Dan Burn & Emil Krafth), might have to be deployed again against Spurs.
📊 Tottenham Form and Stats
Tottenham failed to impress at newly-promoted Leicester in their Premier League opener (1-1), though they bounced back in fine style to blitz Everton 4-0 on their first outing of the campaign in North London.
Spurs’ away form in the league started to regress from around Christmas time last year and Ange Postecoglou will hope that it isn’t a case of old habits dying hard in 2024/25. With their draw at the Foxes included, Tottenham have now won only three times in 14 attempts on their travels in the top tier.
Still, Tottenham’s display against Everton had all the vim and vigour we’ve come to expect from the Londoners under fan favourite, Postecoglou. Spurs lodged a possession figure of 70% and manufactured 2.40 in xGF against the Toffees in their convincing triumph.
With five attacking players (Son, Maddison, Johnson, Kulusevski, Odobert) deployed in the XI’s front six positions, Tottenham’s team had a top-heavy look against Everton, though it remains to be seen if Postecoglou tries to pack quite as much talent into his side at St. James’ Park.
Fullbacks Pedro Porro and Destiny Udogie have seen plenty of action down both flanks for Tottenham in the campaign’s early exchanges. The defenders have committed four and five fouls respectively so far, while they have also been fouled themselves three times each.
⚔️ Newcastle v Tottenham Head-to-Head
Newcastle inflicted Tottenham’s biggest Premier League defeat of the campaign and administered Spurs’ largest thumping under Ange Postecoglou to date when the teams last met at St. James Park in April.
Goals from Alexander Isak (two), Anthony Gordon and Fabian Schar did the damage four months ago when Newcastle combined well-timed passes with well-timed runs to exploit Spurs’ high defensive line.
The scoreline that day was almost an exact reverse of Tottenham’s 4-1 win over Newcastle the previous December however, and a glut of recent fixtures between the clubs have been similarly goal-laden.
The last seven Premier League meetings between Newcastle and Tottenham have averaged a searing 4.85 goals per 90 minutes, while eight of their last nine head-to-heads have featured goals from both teams.
Home advantage has been a key factor in deciding recent outcomes in this fixture and four of the last five tussles between the sides have been won by the hosts. Newcastle put ten goals combined Past Spurs in the teams’ last two encounters in the north east alone.
Slick Swede Alexander Isak has also been a match-changer in this fixture and the 24-year-old managed to bag a brace in each of Newcastle’s last two meetings with Spurs at St. James’ Park.
Tottenham defender Cristian Romero was booked in both of Spurs’ Premier League tests against Newcastle last season and the hard-hitting Argentine could be uncomfortable again against the Magpies pacey frontline on Sunday.
