Oleksandr Usyk to Win by TKO in Rounds 5-8

Usyk’s style is efficient and effective, having that knack of being able to go through the gears and not banking on one-punch power, but instead being well capable of closing the show through domination, overwhelming his opposition rather than rendering them unconscious.

We’ve seen it on countless occasions now, most notably against Tony Bellew and in his first fight with Tyson Fury, where he has allowed himself to grow into the fight and then push the pace to take control. Here, the inexperienced Verhoeven has promised to take the fight to the Ukrainian, but against what is both a mastermind and consummate professional in Usyk, the upset appears to be near impossible.

What Verhoeven does bring to the table is confidence and ‘the unknown’, so in my opinion, the early Usyk stoppage (rounds 1-4 at 5/4) seems to be a short price. Instead, I expect that Usyk will allow himself a few rounds to take a look at Verhoeven and size him up, safe in the knowledge that he can take him out when he decides to press on the accelerator.

Therefore, once Usyk has figured out the puzzle, he should take over and halt the challenger. As a star of his own sport, I expect Verhoeven’s corner or the referee to save him from too much embarrassment, with one of them likely to intervene and award Usyk with a TKO win in rounds 5-8.

Unconventional in more ways than one, Oleksandr Usyk is set to defend his WBC heavyweight world title - and arguably his WBA and IBF straps - against Dutch kickboxing legend, Rico Verhoeven, who boasts a professional boxing record of just 1-0, at the Pyramids of Giza in Egypt.

However, whilst some disagree with the main event, the supporting bill is a solid one, and ahead of the action, I took a look at some of the standout selections that are on offer.

Fixtures for:Saturday 23rd May

Jack Catterall v Shakhram Giyasov

Usyk v Verhoeven

21:00

Jack Catterall by Points or Decision @ 1.80

After going the full distance in eight consecutive fights, Jack Catterall has not done so in his two most recent outings, thanks to an accidental head clash against Harlem Eubank and a referee mishap against Ekow Essuman - which arguably aided a statement stoppage win.

Against Uzbekistan’s Giyasov, Catterall can secure a shot at Rolando Romero’s full WBA welterweight world title. So, I anticipate a low-risk approach, where he shows himself to be a level above the relatively unproven and inactive underdog, with a decision win for ‘El Gato’ nicely priced at 1.62.

Hamzah Sheeraz v Alem Begic

Usyk v Verhoeven

20:00

Hamzah Sheeraz to Win in Rounds 1-6 @ 1.62

Liam Cameron is undeniably one of the toughest and most underrated domestic light-heavyweights around, having lost a highly controversial split-decision to Lyndon Arthur and being robbed of a win in his first fight against Ben Whittaker.

However, after losing in his rematch with Whittaker, Cameron bounced back to defeat Troy Jones in November, whilst Brad Rea lost out to Arthur on that same card.

Cameron and Rea collide here, with neither man perceived to be a power puncher and just one knockout defeat in a combined nine defeats between them.

This one can be expected to be a rough and rugged affair that heads to the scorecards, with 1.57 looking to be extremely good value for a decision play.

Mizuki Hiruta v Mai Soliman

Usyk v Verhoeven

18:00

Mizuki Hiruta by Points or Decision @ 1.36

Japan’s Mizuki Hiruta has hardly dropped a round since becoming the WBO super-flyweight world champion in her fourth professional bout back in December 2022. On Saturday, she attempts a seventh defence of the belt, up against Australia’s, Egyptian-born, Mai Soliman.

Soliman had lost every round to Jasmine Parr before producing a shock stoppage win, but Hiruta is far less susceptible to being caught napping, with the champion likely to cruise to a wide decision win and retain her title without adding to her two career knockouts.
