PSV face an awkward-looking trip to Greece, where they will look to solidify a mixed start to their Champions League campaign after having one win, one draw, and one defeat. It’s already becoming pretty desperate for Olympiacos. After a home draw against Pafos, they were comfortably beaten away at Arsenal and Barcelona, admittedly, some tough luck regarding fixtures.

Both Teams to Score

There’s a clear trend of PSV being involved in extremely open matches, with both sides often getting on the scoresheet. PSV matches in the league have involved an average of 4.63 goals a game, with PSV notching in all but one game. In addition to this, all of PSV’s Champions League games have finished with both teams scoring.

Aside from a 0-0 draw against Pafos, goals have not been an issue for Olympiacos on home soil this season, averaging a hefty 2.8 goals a game in the league. Despite a slight overperformance on expected goals, their expected average goals across those four games has been 2.03. These are still very strong numbers.

With one side extremely clinical at finding the net in home matches, playing against an opposition who’ve only failed to score in one match across all competitions this season, both teams to score looks a very logical play. With Olympiacos desperate for the win, they will need to be on the front foot, and this could leave them open at the back.

PSV Double Chance

PSV are in scintillating form at present, it’s the quality of opposition they’re beating that’s particularly impressive, especially the 6-2 win against Napoli and away win against title rivals Feyenoord in recent weeks.

PSV have also been able to grind out draws against Ajax in the league and Bayer Leverkusen in the Champions League, their only defeat against notable opposition this season came against Union St Gilloise. If the current trend of results continues, they may fancy a run deep into the tournament.

Home advantage for Olympiacos could be key in this game, it is admittedly one of the more hostile places to go in Europe. My gut instinct is leaning towards PSV, I just believe they might have the superior quality to edge this encounter, particularly with their tendency to find the net.

While you can’t draw too many conclusions from the Olympiacos defeats to Arsenal and Barcelona, their home draw against Pafos was particularly disappointing; they were toothless despite playing against ten men for a large period of the game.

📈 Olympiacos v PSV Form & Stats

It’s been a disappointing start to the Champions League campaign for Olympiacos, but things are looking more positive domestically. The hosts are currently occupying 2nd place in the Greek Super League, just one point behind league leaders PAOK.

It’s their home form which has been really impressive so far, winning all five of their league matches, scoring 14 goals and conceding just three goals in the process.

Given their expected defeats against Arsenal and Barcelona in the Champions League, it’s the result against the Cypriot champions Pafos which sticks out as a missed opportunity. The hosts played against 10 men for the majority of the game, but couldn’t force a winner. Their game against Benfica is now must-win.

It’s been a fantastic few weeks for PSV, after thumping Italian champions Napoli 6-2, they also beat league leaders Feyenoord in a top-of-the-table clash to strengthen their claims of winning a second consecutive title.

PSV are scoring goals relentlessly this campaign, it’s now 35 goals in 11 league matches, and eight goals across their first three Champions League games. However, they are somewhat leaky at the other end, conceding 16 goals in Eredivisie matches and six goals across their Champions League matches.

The data suggests PSV are rightfully 1st in the Eredivisie, but there has been an overperformance on expected points and expected goals for. Such is their ruthlessness in front of goal, they have scored 11.13 goals more than expected.
