Gary Rowett has suggested that Oxford need to be much tighter defensively if they are going to survive in this league. That's going to be a tough ask against an Ipswich team that are starting to find their feet back in the Championship and pose a number of threats.

📈 Oxford v Ipswich Form & Stats

Rowett is all about picking up regular points throughout the season, and I think that his Oxford team are managing that just about. They have dropped into the relegation zone in 22nd place thanks due Sheff Utd’s win in the Sheffield derby on Sunday. Oxford are by no means detached from the fight, though, indeed, they have lost only five of their last 14 Championship matches; the issue is that they have won only three of those matches too.

As should be the case with their budget, Oxford are struggling a little to create the chances and score enough goals to fire them into midtable. They sit 19th for expected goals, 20th for shots on target, and 21st for big chances created. Their defence, whilst doing ok, ranked 15th in the league for expected goals against, hasn’t been tight enough to compensate for a poor attack.

Ipswich still aren’t totally convincing despite rising up the table into the play-off positions. They are unbeaten in 10 Championship matches, and they have won their last three away from home. They still seem to find it difficult to turn pressure and shot count into goals, though, and, actually, Hull frustrated Ipswich for almost an hour on Tuesday night, before the extra quality did show and a bit of a bombardment occurred in the second half.

Ipswich are now ranked third in the league for expected goals behind Coventry and Southampton, behind the same two in shots on target, and second in big chances created. They also top big chances missed, so that probably explains a couple of things this season. Ipswich do also have the best defensive record as per expected goals, only 14.5 xG conceded.

📔 Oxford v Ipswich Formation & Team News

Oxford have generally used a 4-2-3-1 system this season under Gary Rowett. They have a couple of good target men strikers in on loan Will Lankshear and Nik Prelec, who have sometimes played together in other systems, but the Harris squared pairing, Mark and Luke, started last time out. I would expect Lankshear to come back in here.

Oxford’s biggest issue is missing captain Cameron Brannagan, who had formed a great central midfield partnership with Brian De Keersmaecker. There are no further injuries or suspensions for Gary Rowett to deal with.

Ipswich have a deep squad so they are rotating their midfielders and forwards in particular. I expect rotation from midweek again, with Sindre Walle Egeli and Jack Clarke likely to come back into the wide forward slots. One enforced change will see Jens Cajuste out, with Jack Taylor likely to play alongside Azor Matusiwa in central midfield.

Kieran McKenna rarely, if ever, deviates from the 4-2-3-1 system that has served him well throughout his time at Ipswich.
