Portugal v Poland
📅
Kick Off: Friday 15th November at 19:45
🏆
Competition: UEFA Nations League
Portugal meet Poland in Porto on Friday night, knowing a point or more will guarantee them a place in the Quarter Finals of the Nations League.
Roberto Martinez’s men are unbeaten in Group 1, with three wins and a goalless draw in Scotland amounting to a tally of ten points. Cristiano Ronaldo continues to star despite calls for his retirement after Euro 2024, scoring three goals so far.
Poland still have a chance of reaching the Quarter Finals too, but if they fail to win here and Poland pick up a point or more, they will be battling relegation from the group with Scotland in their final group game on Monday.
⭐ Portugal v Poland Best Bets
Portugal have won three of their four group games, and in all three wins the opposition scored one goal, including when beating Poland 1-3 in Warsaw a month ago.
Poland have scored in three of their four games. They carry a threat going forward, having scored as many goals as Portugal and Croatia in the Nations League so far.
The absence of Robert Lewandowski doesn’t put me off, given he has only scored one goal from the penalty spot in their Nations League campaign.
👕 Portugal v Poland Predicted XI
🔍 Portugal v Poland Players to Watch
🔴 Bruno Fernandes
Bruno Fernandes must carry on representing Portugal in the shadow of Cristiano Ronaldo for now, despite being arguably their key player.
His key attribute is his ability to carry a goal threat pretty much whichever position he plays. He is not afraid of shooting from anywhere on the pitch.
He has started every Nations League game so far, taking 3+ shots in three out of four matches, only failing when Scotland forced a cagey encounter at Hampden Park last month. I don’t think Poland will be capable of doing the same, given Fernandes managed five against them last time out, and therefore will be backing Fernandes 3+ total shots.
⚪ Sebastian Szymanski
Fenerbahçe’s attacking midfielder Sebastian Szymanski is Poland’s joint top scorer in the Nations League, with two goals from four games.
He has had 2+ attempts on goal in all four games, including three against Portugal in the reverse fixture in October. He is also averaging over two shots per 90 for his club in the Super Lig this season, and according to FotMob has done in every club league campaign since 2019/20.

💻 Portugal v Poland Form and Tactics
After an underwhelming Euro 2024 campaign, Portugal have dusted themselves down well, topping their Nations League group featuring Poland, Croatia and Scotland.
They have stuck with a 4-3-3 formation throughout their four games. They will be without the injured Ruben Dias, who has been an ever-present so far with rotating centre-back partners. Bruno Fernandes should start in midfield, having contributed two assists and one goal in four games.
Poland prefer a 3-5-2 formation, usually spearheaded by legendary striker Robert Lewandowski, but he looks set to miss these decisive games with a back injury.
Michael Probierz’s side have scored as many goals (seven) as Portugal and Croatia, but have conceded nine in the process, which is where they have let themselves down. They’ll be looking towards Southampton centre-back Jan Bednarek to help improve that record.
They boat plenty of attacking threat from midfield, With Nicola Zalewski, Piotr Zielinski and Sebastian Szymanski all scoring two goals each.
