Porto host Sporting CP on Sunday with a good deal to play for, even as they sit a mammoth 18 points behind their opponents at the top of the table.
Porto still have the cup to consider, of course, but with Sporting waiting in the final, they will be underdogs in that affair.
Meanwhile, Ruben Amorim’s side could feasibly win the title at the home of one of their historic rivals on Sunday should Benfica lose to fourth-placed Braga on Saturday.

⚔️ Porto v Sporting Head-to-Head
Porto and Sporting have one of Portugal’s most historic rivalries. It is one that has been dominated by Sergio Conceicao’s side in the early part of the decade, yet the evidence is that the balance of power has taken a sudden shift.
Prior to this season, Porto had won five straight and gone eight undefeated against Los Leoes. A week before Christmas, though, they were soundly beaten 2-0 in Lisbon.
Goals from the prolific Viktor Gyokeres and Pedro Goncalves, who was assisted by the Swede, guided Amorim’s outfit to a famous victory that underlined their status as Portugal’s team of the moment.
A red card to Pepe early in the second half off an ill-tempered encounter helped to skew the balance of power further in favour of the home side, who restricted the visitors to two shots on target.
Although there were only four corners – two apiece – it was a feisty game. Sporting committed 21 fouls to Porto’s 15 while both teams saw five yellow cards.
Such a fiery affair is hardly unprecedented. Sporting have seen at least five cards in each of their last five matches with Los Dragoes while there has been a red card in four of these clashes.
📊 Porto Form and Stats
Porto have suffered a major hangover since crashing out of the Champions League at the hands of Arsenal in mid March. In the subsequent five league matches, they have picked up only seven points, well below what is expected of them.
This recent run also marks a dramatic turn from the sequence prior to the Emirates trip in which they were at least threatening to compete for second. This was highlighted by a 5-0 win over Benfica.
Conceicao’s side are certainly not shot-shy. They are averaging 16.6 shots per 90 this season with 1.86 xG – figures that remain roughly intact even during this weak spell.
Instead, it is their defence that has been failing. They have conceded in five successive games for the first time this season. Only once before had they even gone more than two matches without a clean sheet. Ahead of the visit of a team that has scored 19 more goals in Portugal’s top-flight than any other.
It is also notable that in matches in which they have failed to win, their count of cards is significant. Across the three recent encounters that they have failed to win in the league, Porto have seen 19 cards, indicating that keeping a lid on their temper when things are not going their way is problematic.
📊 Sporting Form and Stats
Sporting may be out of Europe, but there is absolutely nothing wrong with their domestic form. The Lisbon club are on an eight-match winning streak domestically that includes a 2-1 success over second-placed Benfica.
Los Leoes did suffer something of a wobble in their derby clash, though. With 0.9 xG, they snatched victory thanks to an injury-time goal from Geny Catamo. It was just the fourth occasion this season that they had created below 1 xG in a top-flight match this term, with one of those other games also against Benfica.
Amorim’s side were also a little mute in their previous away match with Famalicao, generating 0.8 xG but getting maximum points via a strike from Pedro Goncalves.
Goncalves also opened the scoring last weekend in a 3-0 triumph over Vitoria, in which leading scorer Viktor Gyokeres, who has 24 goals for the season, bagged a double.
Sporting will hope those goals click the Swede back into some form. Prior to that brace, he had gone four league matches without scoring – his longest run since arriving from Coventry City last summer.
Interestingly, the Lisbon outfit have picked up 74 cards in Primeira Liga play this season, yet 21 of these have come in just five matches against the top four clubs.
💰 Porto v Sporting CP Best Bets
Sporting to take the win at 2.63 looks excellent value given the respective form of the two teams. A more conservative option that looks a probable winner is backing a Sporting win or draw at 1.44 on Paddy Power.
In particular, Porto’s recent leaky defensive record does not bode well against so powerful an attacking unit, and with Gyokeres back on the goal trail, you can back Viktor Gyokeres to score anytime on bet365 at 2.75. The Swede was the decisive figure when the sides met earlier this season.
