With Arsenal strongly fancied for the Premier League and also current favourites for the Champions League as well, this tie at Fratton Park will be the first time that many people will begin to think about the fabled treble, something that Arsenal have never achieved before.
Portsmouth will always fancy their chances at home, though, and have a fairly recent FA Cup win of their own.

📂 Portsmouth v Arsenal Cheat Sheet
📈 Portsmouth v Arsenal Form & Stats
Portsmouth were tipped by many, including myself, for a good season in the Championship, a potential dark horse for play-off contention. It has not gone to plan. They continue to retain faith in John Mousinho, the man who guided them to promotion back to the second tier a year and a half ago, but patience is wearing thin amongst the fan base.
Fratton Park hasn’t been the fortress that it often can be this season. Five wins, five losses, and three draws is the league record so far this season, which represents the 18th best record in the Championship, and in fairness, is still better than their one win in 11 away from home, the 23rd best record in the league. Their xG total is 22nd in the league, which is also their ranking for shots on target. They are a little better defensively, ranking 13th in the league.
We all know how well Arsenal have done so far this season. Top of the Premier League, but coming off a difficult game on Thursday night, frustratingly unable to break down a stubborn, and surprisingly defensive, Liverpool side. With the lack of time between the league fixture and this FA Cup tie, it will be interesting to see how much of the usual league team is chosen by Mikel Arteta.
Heavy rotation would mean that most form statistics would go out of the window. Indeed, it isn’t easy to find relevant historic fixtures to this one. This is mainly because you have to go back to 2020 to find the last time that Arsenal progressed past January in the FA Cup, which is remarkable for the club who actually hold the record for the most FA Cup wins (14) and the last one was indeed in 2020. Funnily enough, Arsenal visited Fratton Park in that run too, winning 2-0 in the fifth round.
Arsenal’s last trip to a Championship team in the FA Cup was a 0-1 defeat at Nottingham Forest in 2022, though I think it is fair to say that both Pompey and Arsenal find themselves in different places than Forest and 2022 Arsenal.
📔 Portsmouth v Arsenal Formation & Team News
Pompey are not having the best of times with injuries at the moment, which is definitely impacting their form. The recent news of Mark Kosznovsky’s terrible ACL and MCL knee injury sums up the situation John Mousinho is fighting against right now. Colby Bishop is unlikely to be back, Hayden Matthews is out, and Josh Murphy will be missing too.
Mousinho has been a 4-2-3-1 man, but their most recent shape was a 3-4-3, and given the likely domination of Arsenal, I am expecting a three or five at the back shape from Pompey here.
Arsenal, on the other hand, are more than likely to stick to their 4-3-3 shape, albeit they have a number of players with knocks or slight injuries who are doubtful. Piero Hincapie has added to Arsenal’s defensive depth struggles, with Cristhian Mosquera and Riccardo Calafiori also missing. We are likely to see fringe players such as fit-again Gabriel Jesus, Cristian Norgaard, Noni Madueke, and Ethan Nwaneri get a start here.
