Portsmouth have shown a good level of competitiveness this season, losing just four of their opening 11 games, such form is likely to put them on a positive trajectory to avoid relegation. They currently sit 15th in the table.

It’s been a good start to the season for Stoke, sitting 6th in the league and acquiring 18 points from 11 games. However, the victories have dried up in recent times.

Portsmouth Double Chance

Portsmouth are showing grit and resilience this season, exemplified by only losing four in 11 games so far in the Championship. The hosts have already played some very tough fixtures, and often competed well in those fixtures.

Credible draws against Southampton and Leicester, while a win against 2nd place Middlesbrough show an ability to compete against the big dogs at this level. Before the game against high flying Coventry, they were undefeated in three consecutive fixtures.

It’s undoubtedly been a good start to the season for Stoke, but with just two wins in their last eight games, winning has become more difficult. They are playing out lots of really low margin games, with goals and chances in short supply.

In those eight games they haven’t scored more than one goal on any occasion, which can understandably make winning matches a harder endeavour. Their recent 1-0 home win against Wrexham was a less than convincing display, it could have easily finished in a 0-0 draw.

Over 8.5 Corners

Fratton Park has become synonymous with corners over the last couple of years, Portsmouth continually post really strong averages. The home side have managed 37 corners in six home games. Those numbers dramatically dropped off in home matches against Middlesbrough and Watford, where they had two and three corners respectively.

Games at Fratton Park have averaged 10.33 corners this season, there was only one occasion where over eight corners didn’t land. Smaller pitches are often more conducive to corners, because there’s less space in wide areas, which can make it easier to block/deflect a cross out of play.

Stoke’s data also makes this a worthy angle, the visitors are currently conceding an average of 5.16 corners in away games this season. Stoke’s away matches this season have averaged 10.50 corners per game, putting us over the required average. There has only been one occasion in their six away games where over eight corners didn’t land.

📈 Portsmouth v Stoke Form & Stats

Stoke have become part of the Championship furniture over the last seven years, a stark contrast to former heights in the Premier League. Despite pre-season optimism across many campaigns, they have always flattered to deceive. However, under the stewardship of Mark Robins, they are finally making some positive strides forward.

Stoke began the season with three consecutive victories, but the consequential form has been more patchy and inconsistent. In terms of the underlying data, Stoke are overperforming their xG data - the Opta Analyst xG table currently has them 10th.

It’s been a satisfying start to the season for Portsmouth after the bookies installed them as one of the relegation favourites, they have racked up a competitive points tally and will be confident of avoiding the drop.

Importantly, Portsmouth have faced many of the best sides in this division already, showing an ability to be defensively sturdy and streetwise. Portsmouth’s league position of 15th shows a slight overperformance of their xG - the xG table currently has them at 17th.

Their overperformance on key data metrics isn’t surprising, considering they’ve faced Southampton, Leicester and Ipswich all away from home, where coming under pressure for long periods is inevitable.
