📈 PSG v Liverpool Form & Stats

PSG are growing into this competition, just as they did last season, with their 8-2 demolition of Chelsea over two legs in the last round, a sign of their maturity when the Parisians enter the knockout stages. PSG are such a fun side to watch with their array of attacking players and interesting approach under Luis Enrique which focuses on counter pressing and attacking overloads.

I’d say that PSG and Barcelona are the most entertaining sides to watch in Europe at the moment, so Enrique has found a way to keep things engaging while also being successful. PSG have tended to see goals at home in their recent home games in the Champions League with BTTS landing in each of their last five in front of their home fans.

Liverpool enter this game under a lot more pressure following their FA Cup exit at the hands of Manchester City. The manner of that exit was particularly embarrassing with Liverpool falling to a 4-0 defeat, Virgil Van Dijk later came out and admitted that he thought that Liverpool gave up a bit towards the end of that game - a damning admission with Slot under increasing pressure having lost the majority of the fanbase.

That being said, Liverpool do tend to thrive in the Champions League - this is the last trophy on offer to Arne Slot and his side, and with the race for Europe looking incredibly tight in the Premier League, it may only be winning the Champions League which secures Liverpool a spot in the competition next season. There are a few good omens going in their favour, most notably the fact that in four of the last five Champions League seasons - the holders have not progressed past the quarter final stage.

📔 PSG v Liverpool Formation & Team News

PSG have been battling with injuries all season, which isn’t that surprising seeing as they had such a long campaign last season and then went on to reach the Club World Cup final. Most of their key players should be back here, though Fabian Ruiz and Bradley Barcola are doubts. PSG’s depth and trust in youth make these losses a bit easier for Luis Enrique to manage, with PSG expected to set up in a 4-3-3 shape.

This structure relies on PSG being active with a counter press. They commit so many bodies forward, which would usually be a massive risk, but their pressing is so good that it leads to them trapping the opposition in their own half. I have seen a few sides find solutions to this - most notably sending a roaming fullback to run from deep to expose the high line that PSG play with. Szoboszlai could be particularly useful in this role if he is required to fill in at right back again.

Liverpool could set up in a variety of shapes, which speaks to their general inconsistency this season. I think Slot will pack the midfield, this is what he has done in most big games this season - and he’ll also be aware that his side is quite vulnerable at the moment having just been on the end of a battering. Liverpool need to stay in the tie, so a compact shape is expected with as many as five midfielders set to take to the field for Liverpool.
