PSV v Liverpool
📅
Kick Off: Wednesday 29th January at 20:00
🏆
Competition: UEFA Champions League
📺
Watch Live: TNT Sports 3
Liverpool make the journey to Eindhoven on Wednesday night as Arne Slot’s side look to retain their 3-point advantage at the top of the UEFA Champions League table. PSV, meanwhile, find themselves with just a slender 3-point safety cushion separating them from potential elimination. Given the stakes at play, you can expect a fiercely contested battle between the 2 sides.
⭐ PSV v Liverpool Best Bet
The simple fact is that this match means a lot more to PSV than it does to Liverpool.
The Reds will finish 1st or 2nd in the table and have already qualified for the last 16. They have much bigger fish to fry at the weekend with a very tricky match away to in-form Bournemouth to focus on. Liverpool could potentially name quite a weak XI here and there is sure to be a lot of rotation.
PSV are not officially qualified for the play-off round but the pressure is off them due to a decent goal difference. The higher they finish the better and they are the team likely to bring more motivation, drive and energy to this match. The draw is very possible but taking PSV on the DNB market gives us more security. This could be a great time to face a potentially distracted Liverpool.

- Referee Tobias Stieler has awarded 0.50 penalties per game in the UCL this season and 0.39 in all competitions.

- Both teams rank in the top 11 for cards obtained in the Champions League this season and have not been particularly clean.
👕 PSV v Liverpool Predicted XI

🔍 PSV v Liverpool Players to Watch
⚫️ Darwin Nunez
This looks like a great chance for Arne Slot to give a start to Darwin Nunez, who is often consigned to the bench in key matches. He will be desperate to make a mark and if in the mood can be a potential shot machine.
Nunez only averages 1.50 shots per game in the Premier League this season but that figure rises to 2.10 in the Champions League. However, on 11 different occasions this term he’s fired at least 3 shots and those are mostly in matches where he gets significant minutes. He amassed 4 v Leicester, 4 v Southampton, 5 v Accrington Stanley and 4 v Brentford. Nunez might see the full 90 minutes here which would give him ample opportunity to cover this shot line.
🔴 Johan Bakayoko
The Belgian winger has been linked to the Premier League this January with Newcastle especially interested. This could be a nice shop window for him to showcase his talents before a mad rush at the end of the transfer window.
Bakayoko averages 3.10 shots per game in the Champions League this season which is actually higher than his rate in the Eredivisie (2.20). In the UCL matches teams are less defensive v PSV and he will have more space and time on the break. He had 3 shots v Brest, 5 v Shakhtar, 4 v Girona and 5 against Sporting. He is only this generous price to have 3 or more shots because of Liverpool’s reputation. But he might be facing a 2nd-string defence here which would greatly aid his chances.
🔴 Jerdy Schouten
This looks a huge price for PSV’s defensive midfielder to commit multiple fouls. Schouten averages 0.60 fouls per match domestically but that figure rises to 1.70 in the Champions League. He should get the start in DM again and could be up against Wataru Endo, Dominik Szoboszlai and Harvey Elliott, who between them should be able to draw Schouten into making at least one foul. Taking him to commit multiple offences just looks too big of a price to ignore at 3.20. He missed half the season due to injury but is now a mainstay of this PSV midfield.

💻 PSV v Liverpool Form and Tactics
- PSV have only lost 2 group stage games and beat Red Star Belgrade 3-2 last week.
- Their last 7 matches in all competitions have gone over 2.5 goals with 6 of them going over 3.5.
- Manager Peter Bosz plays almost an exclusive 4-3-3 attack-minded formation which is high tempo.
- Liverpool are the only team with a 100% record in the Champions League this season. They laboured to a 2-1 victory v Lille last week.
- Arne Slot’s version of play here at Liverpool is not quite so heavy metal compared to the Jurgen Klopp era, but it’s a high-pressing 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3 hybrid and nothing will change here.
