Barcelona (-1 Handicap)

Barcelona have started the new season exactly as they finished the last, with back-to-back wins setting the tone for Hansi Flick’s side. Even without Robert Lewandowski leading the line, the Catalans have shown no signs of taking their foot off the gas.

Last time out, they produced a second-half turnaround against Levante to keep their perfect record intact, underlining both their resilience. With two wins from two, Barcelona are one of only five teams in La Liga to have collected maximum points, sitting just behind Villarreal at the top of the table on goal difference.

Ferran Torres to Score Anytime

Barcelona have scored six goals across their opening two games, and while Lamine Yamal has naturally stolen the headlines, the impact of Ferran Torres has flown under the radar. The Spaniard has stepped up in Lewandowski’s absence, scoring in both games. Ferran seems likely to retain his starting spot given his good form, even if Lewandowski is passed fit to start here.

Since arriving from Man City, Ferran has shown steady progression, with the 24/25 campaign under Hansi Flick proving his most successful with 19 goals from 45 appearances. The 24-year-old will be hoping to further improve that tally this season.

A Notoriously Stubborn Opponent

Vallecano saw an average of just 2.26 goals per game in La Liga last season, highlighting their pragmatic style which often made for low-scoring encounters. Their defensive approach was a defining feature, as they regularly sat back in a deep block with the aim of restricting chances for their opponents. In fact, no side achieved more draws than Vallecano in La Liga last season, with 13.

Against Barcelona in particular, Vallecano showed how frustrating this approach could be. Although both meetings ultimately ended in defeat, they were closely-contested affairs finishing 2-1 at the Vallecas Stadium, and 1-0 in the reverse fixture.

Their low-block is unlikely to change this season, and may even be more pronounced to cope with the additional Conference League commitments. Vallecano lost 1-0 to Athletic Club at San Mames last time out in the league. They registered just six shots worth 0.29 xG, though the hosts’ only goal came from the penalty spot.

🔴 Confidence Flowing in Catalonia

Last season, Hansi Flick’s tenure got off to a perfect start, as Barcelona won seven straight league games to begin the campaign - the Catalans look well on track to repeat that feat this term.

Barcelona have already displayed the grit and resilience of champions in their most recent outing against Levante. Despite being far from their best at the Ciudad de Valencia Stadium, Barcelona still managed to fight back after falling two goals behind in the first-half, eventually finding the winning goal deep into stoppage time in the 91st minute.

Lamine Yamal once again played a decisive role in turning the match around. The 17-year-old provided the assist for Pedri’s equaliser to spark the comeback, before delivering the cross that led to the winner. Beyond his playmaking, Yamal also registered eight shots in the match, with two efforts hitting the target.

📊 Rayo Vallecano v Barcelona H2H

Barcelona had the upper hand in this head-to-head tussle last season, taking six points off Vallecano in La Liga.

However, Vallecano have had some success in this matchup over the years - they have won three and drawn two of the last eight head-to-head encounters.
