It’s a bit of a local derby match on Saturday with 9th placed Salford taking on 15th placed Oldham, the derby element should add some spice and a tingle of excitement in the air.

Salford can strengthen their play-off claims with a win on Saturday after a topsy-turvy start to the season, while Oldham can also strengthen their play-off ambitions after a confident start to life back in the football league; their league position hasn’t been a fair reflection of their performances on the pitch.

Salford City v Oldham Best Bet

Fixtures for: Saturday 18th October

Salford City v Oldham

League Two

12:30

Over 0.5 Oldham Goals

Oldham may have blanked in their most recent match against Barrow, but previously they did manage to score a goal in five consecutive league matches. Salford's home matches have been really entertaining affairs, with twenty goals scored across just six matches, ten goals scored and ten goals conceded. Crucially though, Salford haven’t kept a clean sheet in any home league match this season, there’s been a tendency to play out very open matches with both sides creating a decent number of chances.

Despite Oldham only scoring 10 goals this season, they are underperforming their ‘expected goals for’ by a whopping 9.9 goals (19.9 total). This poor finishing will surely improve over the duration of the season.

There’s another key reason for providing this selection: Salford currently rank 24th in the league for xG conceded from set pieces, with 7.46 xG conceded. Meanwhile, Oldham rank 4th in the league with 6.35 xG scored. This is a huge potential flash point that provides real logical arguments to further support the selection. Now, while football isn’t always that simple, taking into account the xG set piece data, you could argue there’s over a 50% chance Oldham could score from a set piece, and that’s completely independent of the ‘open play’ data.

📈 Salford City v Oldham Form & Stats

Salford have become an all-or-nothing team so far this season, drawing just the solitary one match against Cheltenham, while winning six and losing five of their remaining games. Salford had a very fruitful spell in September, winning three consecutive matches. However, losing their last three consecutive league matches has proved to be a sobering reality check. Their performances in those three defeats were better than the results suggested, though.

A leaky backline continues to plague Salford; they’ve conceded 17 goals and rank 21st in the league for ‘expected goals conceded’. For a team harbouring ambitions of a play-off challenge, these underlying metrics will surely need to improve. As touched upon, defending set pieces has been a real issue for them, and they have been very fortunate not to concede more goals from set pieces (4 conceded from 7.46 xG).

Oldham were slightly unlucky against Barrow in their last match; they were certainly the more progressive side in the second half. Michael Mellon went agonisingly close on three occasions to grabbing a goal and a likely winner. Many could argue that Oldham are in a false league position; despite sitting 15th, they are positioned 4th in the xG table. As touched upon earlier, poor finishing in front of goal has seemingly been their undoing, and the finishing has been freakishly bad; these metrics are likely to improve significantly over a forty-six-game season.

Inconsistency continues to be an issue for Oldham; in a similar vein to Salford, they won three consecutive league matches during September, but have gone winless in their last three league matches. Independent of those three consecutive league wins for Oldham, they haven’t managed to win any other league match this season, and that could be a mild source of concern. However, they do sit a hefty seven points clear of the relegation zone, and this will provide a degree of comfort.
