San Marino v Austria
Kick Off: Tuesday 10th June at 19:45
Competition: World Cup 2026 Qualifying
San Marino have lost all three of their qualifying games so far, conceding eight goals in the process
Austria kicked off their qualifying campaign with a 2-1 win over Romania
San Marino conceded an average of 3.1 goals per game during their EURO qualification campaign
Austria will be hoping to strengthen their grip on Group H here, and close the gap to Bosnia who currently lead the way at this early stage of qualification. Ralf Rangnick’s side caught the eye during the European Championships last summer and will be hoping to book a place at the World Cup next year by topping this group.
The writing is on the wall early for San Marino who have lost all three of their qualifying games so far, conceding eight goals across these matches and only managing to score once. They will certainly struggle against the toughest side in the group on paper.
⭐ San Marino v Austria Predictions and Best Bets
As expected, Austria have been backed very heavily in the win market, there isn’t any value in backing them to pick up a victory here. Instead, individual goalscorers are worth considering, Austria could end up racking up the goal count which will give some of their reliable players in front of the target a chance to get on the scoresheet, against weak opposition by international standards.
Michael Gregoritsch stands out as a potential option, he scored Austria’s opener against Romania in their opening qualifying game and has scored 20 goals across his 65 international appearances for Austria. He hasn’t enjoyed the most prolific domestic season, but his record for his country suggests that he could get some joy here.
Backing Austria to punish their opponents early on is also worth looking at in such a one sided contest. They should be able to expose the San Marino backline early on, just as Romania did in their recent 5-1 win over San Marino as the away side.
🔵 San Marino's Struggles Ever-Present in Qualifying
San Marino have long been the designated minnows of these qualifying groups. Unsurprisingly, they sit bottom of Group H having lost all three of their games so far, conceding eight goals in the process and only managing to muster one goal themselves - which came against Romania in a 5-1 defeat.
San Marino did manage to get some joy in their Nations League D campaign, finishing top of a three team group which also contained Gibraltar and Liechtenstein. This won’t be too relevant for this contest given the quality advantage that Austria hold over San Marino, but it does show that the home side here can put in respectable performances against the teams that are ranked in and around them in the FIFA World Rankings.
San Marino lost all 10 of their qualifying games in attempting to reach the European Championships. They conceded 31 goals across these matches, only managing to score three goals themselves in this period. Unfortunately for San Marino, a similar sort of pattern appears to be playing out here.
🔴 A Transformed Austria Fancy Their Chances
Ralf Rangnick has transformed this Austria side into an entertaining outfit which showcased their excellence in the European Championships last summer. They will fancy their chances of topping this group with Romania and Bosnia their main challengers, they’ve already seen off Romania at home (2-1) and now have a few games against San Marino and Cyprus, before travelling to Bosnia.
Austria should win both of those games comfortably, which puts them in an excellent position to put real pressure on Bosnia, who have won all three of their qualifying games so far. Austria finished second to Norway in their Nations League B group, only losing one of the six games in the competition. They tend to be pretty free scoring, they scored 14 goals across their six games in that Nations League group, which also contained Slovenia and Kazakhstan.
