Reims v Rennes
🏟
Saturday 9th April – 4:00PM KO
Reims may have a curiously impressive record against Rennes in Ligue 1 in recent seasons, but they have rarely come up against the Breton outfit when they have been in such impressive form. Indeed, it would be a feat for the hosts if they were to extend their seven-match undefeated run against a team that looks increasingly destined for the Champions League next season.
The home side are still battling numerous selection problems in their ranks, although they have coped admirably without a string of regulars in recent weeks, piecing together a five-match undefeated run that was only ended by Troyes in a derby last weekend.
Rennes, though, have been France’s outstanding team over the past couple of months. Although a five-match winning streak was ended as they were held 1-1 by Nice away from home last weekend, they have been free-flowing offensively and had scored 20 goals in their previous five matches, winning each of those.
They have been improving what had been a modest away record in recent weeks, too. Wins have come against Montpellier and Lyon – teams of a better standing than Reims. With Rennes in such free-scoring form, there could be value in backing over 2.5 goals at 2.15, especially as their last visit to Reims last season ended in a 2-2 draw, but simply supporting an away win here looks like good value given how impressive Les Rouge et Noir have been since February

Clermont v PSG
🏟
Saturday 9th April – 8:00PM KO
Clermont’s recent form has seen them slide towards the relegation zone. They have lost all of their last four matches in Ligue 1 while their poor home form all season has undermined their campaign. Indeed, they have won just three of 15 games as Stade Gabriel-Montpied, albeit two of those were against Rennes and Lille.
PSG, meanwhile, are closing in on the title and it is about time they ended a four-match losing streak away from home in all competitions. Last weekend, they produced easily their best performance in weeks to defeat Lorient 5-0 at home. In particular, Kylian Mbappe was in thrilling form, scoring two and adding a hat-trick of assists.
This is not a match that sets up well on paper for Clermont. They stick rigidly to their principles of playing possession football – they virtually matched PSG in terms of time on the ball when they met earlier this season – but will come up against a side simply better than them at it. Furthermore, they will be depleted offensively, with Elbasan Rashani, their second-leading scorer, missing. At the back, key defender Cedric Hountondji is out with an arm issue.
When the teams met earlier this season, PSG ran out 4-0 winners and if they can show the offensive appetite they managed last weekend, the visitors should have few troubles ending their travel sickness on Saturday. Not only should they win – they should do so with a fair degree of comfort.
